I have just built up my new pc with the primary os drive as ahci (ssd) and all is well. However when I plug in my sata drive it just hangs on the windows boot up screen. I am thinking this is something to do with this being in my old pc under sata ide?

it should work ok if its a sata drive

only if it was an older ide drive it wouldn't work (unless you switched to ide mode)

what motherboard?

EDIT: did you makesure the ssd is set as first boot device after you connected the hdd? it will try to boot from your old hdd/windows and that won't have the ahci drivers hence reboot/bsod at windows animation screen

is your old hdd blank? or does it have old windows install still on it

latest bios for your mb might help

The ssd is set as the first boot device, the second hdd had been formatted (originally was a secondary steam data drive) I think the problem is that on the original windows install in my system the bit drive was installed as a sata ide drive, and that had set my secondary as ide also? Windows boots fine when just the ssd is plugged in, but freezes on the windows logo with the second drive. The drive worked fine in my old system

No joy at all.. If I boot via windows 7 usb to with bios set to ide,it starts fine, but ahci just hangs at the windows logo (no hard drive access noises) I have tried deleting the partion in ide mode, and then changing to ahci but same end result? Also tried all sata ports.. It's looking like my 2 x 120gb drives are no use in ahci?
