So Im getting my first SSD with my new build. I have read that it performs best in ahci mode and aditionally the hot swap bay on my 650d will only work in ahci. Now I was wondering how to ensure that ahci was enabled when I first install W7, because I see plenty of info regarding a 'dodgy' work around to do it post installaton, that may have stability issues.

Thanks for any help!

just set the sata ports in the bios to ahci and install windows

nothing wrong with the reg hack either, its only needed if you dont set to ahci before you install windows as you cant change it once windows has installed without a reinstall

ive used the reg tweak many many times and never had issues, all it does is allow the ahci drivers to install themselves or else it will bsod

Newbie question... So simply boot the computer first time go into the bios, set AHCI. Then install windows after a reboot?

Yup, and AHCI is probably the default anyway. Obviously check first, doesn't take 2 mins.

Set BIOS to AHCI, windows 7/8 will do the rest automagically.
