Hi there, to get windows to install (as it wouldnt with IDE mode) I selected AHCI in bios.. It now works fine, I have a 150gb raptor and a 500gb spinpoint. Now I read that intel recommends raid mode, does this have any benefits over AHCI other than adding the ability to raid? I prefer the drives stay standalone, I have no intention of raiding, but if its better than AHCI I'll reinstall windows to make the switch.

I am not sure, but it seems that you dont understand just how RAID actually works?

First off, you say that you cannot install in IDE mode, but you were ok in AHCI or RAID mode?

Well, the IDE mode is the way that will always work no matter what... The AHCI mode should not really have been able withotu adding drivers off the disk?

But, its in now, so thats fine.

You have a 150 and a 500 right.

Well, the AHCI mode is really only of use to you if you have SATA 2 Controler and Drive, and it should allow them to communicate very fast, and faster than standard IDE mode, but in truth, I have not seen any real benefit.

RAID mode is not an option for you really.

In basic ( Quick ) terms, RAID will let you take 2 drives that are the same size , and make one drive that is twice as big or will let you have one drive thats the normal size, but have a backup of that drive on the second drive. Both ways have faster disk access.

In your case, you will have to set aside 150GB of Disk 2 and ignore the rest so oyu have in effect, ended up with either a 300GB Drive ( 150GB + 150GB ) or a 150GB Drive with a mirrored 150GB from drive 2... Or in other words, a load of wasted disk space.

Basically, you are runnign in AHCI mode now. Tryign to use RAID at this time would wipe *** data off your disks as will going to ID mode actually, so accept how it is running now, and just leave it be.
