Ahead of it's time

I played Deus Ex right after reading Neuromancer by William Gibson!

Similar world environment. excellent story, (though a bit of a tough read at times)

Made me love the game more.

Deux Ex Machina, note it's "Machina" not "Machine" as others have said was the first and original of the whole series, so will you need your coat on the way out of town? :D

That game has nothing to do with the Deus Ex series, so you're either misled or you're trolling me.

Elite 2 - Frontier is still probably my all time favourite, sheer scale of the game at the time was mind boggling, especially considering it was on a floppy disc :p

Few others that spring to mind are Gran Turismo, GTA 3, Freespace 2, Call of Duty 1 (single player campaign), Final Fantasy 7/8.

that's just the term Deus Ex Machina. It's a term used for when something inexplicable happens in a story which neatly ties up loose ends which can't be otherwise explained.

This game isn't affiliated with Deus Ex is it? i'm confused now!

I'm inclined to mention Halo: Combat evolved as well.

Big, open levels, the RT/LT/Y combo. The further you got in that game, the more awesome it became.

I wasn't in to pc gaming then, but i don't really recall another fps which gave you as much freedom. But please, correct me if i'm wrong:)

maybe not 'ahead of it's time' but certainly got more things right than previous fps, so a step forward at least.

Deus ex machina is a Greek phrase, meaning "God from the machine". It refers to a dramatic device employed in Greek plays, whereby the complex and contrived plots would be resolved by the introduction of a "God" who would set things right. The God would appear as an elaborate machine with pyrotechnics and whatnot. This was the "Deus ex machina".

The phrase is used nowadays to refer to a preposterous plot resolution by way of the introduction of a resolving force.

The use of the name in the 2001 game refers to the advancement of technology to the level at which a machine can become the modern day equivalent of an old day God.

Now, you were saying?

Deus Ex is a series of first person video games, consisting of three games: Deus Ex (2000), Deus Ex: Invisible War (2003), and Deus Ex: Human Revolution (TBA).

Deus Ex Machina has nothing to do with the trio of Deus Ex games, the three above are the Deus Ex games which people refer to, that old one I've never even heard of and if someone mentions Deus Ex in a thread like this then it's a fairly safe bet to assume they are talking about the game released in 2000.

Oh, and we just got trolled. :p

It is irrelevant anyway really, as even if that game was something to do with the series, we were discussing the game Deus Ex as a great game and ahead of it's time anyway.

edit- basically what K1LLSW1TCH just said.

You couldn't let it go could you:p

Oh good grief how can someone not have heard of the term deus ex machina :D

In terms of the sequels.

Invisible War: I actually really liked, it was never going to be an easy game to follow but I think it did a lot right, unfortunately some things it did very wrong (universal ammo sucked big time) I enjoyed the story.

The new one is pleasing me greatly, my initial impressions like most other people were shock, horror, please leave it alone. However, everything I have seen and read seems to suggest that the devs have got the world bang on, I'm hoping it's not too action-centric and still has time for the other stuff (Deus Ex Hong Kong level in particular is still one of the greatest things ever)

Agreed. When i first saw the 5 minute trailer, i was shouting "yes. thats it. totally bang on"
But now, iv'e just got this creeping feeling you know... Overdue, not much news:(

i'm still looking forward to this more than the Neuromancer film though!!

I was thinking about those old PS1 games, Parapa the rapper and the ingenius Um Jammer Lammy. When you think about it, they are not that far away from Guitar hero/rockband, (primitive versions of course) but they weren't really that popular at the time. didn't get the recognition that they deserved imo.

Also, does anyone else remember Vib Ribbon. If that was ahead of its's time, then the time still hasn't arrived yet!!! I'm not sure it even has a time. Loved it though.
