Hey all. I’ve had my two XT12 node system on an Ethernet backhaul working fine for the best part of 7 months.

Either it was a recent update in Feb or that issue with Virgin fibre that’s not been the same since. Thought to note internet is fine.

My 2nd node is constantly flashing blue LED which indicates syncing with router. However it’s connecting via Ethernet so it sure why this is.

Essentially I have only WiFi at the main router node which is on the 1st floor front of the house. This isn’t good as I can’t get much WiFi towards the back of the house.

I’ve tried rebooting/removing and resetting. Changed network cable. Even bought a new pair of XT12 to try as the additional nodes and it’s the same.

Any ideas why Ethernet backhaul no longer works? WiFi backhaul does work but not ideal due to the size of the house and thick walls.

Have you asked Asus for product support?

Have you changed the cable it's connecting with? Have you tried another port on the router?

No. I've not had much luck with the support plus its mainly around their PC side of things.

Yes and actually no as for connecting backhaul you need to use the WAN port. Tested on two nodes and its the same issue. The only thing I've not done is reset the main router. Can't do that yet due to work commitments. Though WiFi from the 1st main unit works fine as long as I'm in the room or directly downstairs. The fall-off drops fast and especially after 4 rooms.

Is it a direct cable connecting the two nodes or is there anything in between (eg switch, powerline, etc)? What about if you test it directly next to the main node with a short cable?

Just a standard network cable cat 5e and have also tried cat 6. No switches or powerline direct from the main router to the other node.

It’s weird as it was working fine until recently. WiFi backhaul works alright ish when it works but the walls are too thick. Stretching out the connection via Ethernet from front to back of the house is my best bet.

Have to resort waiting for Virgin hub 5 and WiFi booster pods. Probably still a crap job.

For the money they cost that's a poor show. But it's Asus, so I'm not in the least bit surprised.
Not totally fair, mine have been absoutely spot on (and I use a 15m Cat6a ethernet between them for the backhaul). Can't fault them.

@Yella Fella its weird you say it happened recently as there hasn't been any Firmware updates since the end of Dec. There is a new early beta out, you haven't accidently upgraded to that (there is an option to allow the units to flash beta Firmware). It'll be v9.x if the beta has gone on by accident.

Cheers.

I know it sucks. I’m gonna try again as need an asset. These nodes aren’t exactly cheap. Might have to look at Google WiFi options again.
Don't look at the Google or Amazon equivalents unless you like having zero control over what goes on. You can't beat the Asus units for the miriad of options it allows you to work with.

I absolutely love the units and have a lot of control for what it is. Just confused to what has happened ha. My firmware for all 4 nodes is 3.0.0.4.388_22127.

I’m running 2 via Ethernet backhaul and the 3rd as wireless.

Have you noticed your external nodes, not the main router node, ever flash blue or always white?

No sorry mine don't do that. You say you haven't reset the main router / node. That might be the key here. When you get spare time. Just to check you have got it set to backhaul manually and not set to auto? Just in case there's an easy fix here. Mine are manually set to backhaul mode. EDIT: Added pics to help explain.

Hey bud. Yeah mine is definitely set to manual backhaul WAN. But constantly flashing blue almost as if it’s on WiFi backhaul despite connected via cable.

I tried to upload pics but can’t do it via my phone so it’s just links…

So I just tried resetting the 2nd node again. I can’t connect via Ethernet but only WiFi when setting up.

I’m not sure if that’s correct as I assumed having an Ethernet cable would have been fine for initial setup.

Anyways once it starts and finishes. The LED stays red. But yet the node is added without me finding a node for the mesh. It’s like I can never really reset it as it automatically connects again.

I wonder if the 2nd node think it’s a router and getting confused.
