AIO or Aircooler

I have Thermalright IFX-14 from 2007 (what became original Silver Arrow). I've got new mounts and changed fans, not because fans were bad but because I wanted black/white instead of ugly colored ones. Still working as well as they did when new. Don't remember what I paid for them but it was like half what new coolers with similar performance now cost.

I used a single fan Thermalright cooler (not sure what model) on my Q6600 and it worked superb for seven years.

Still on the board and was working when I de-commissioned that system.

My current PC has all six ram slots occupied so an AIO was the best option for me.

I said if it failed I'd buy another but I wouldn't discount a good air cooler if it had enough ram clearance for my Corsair Vengeance (quite tall) sticks.

Just looking at this Scythe Mugen 5, not sure how good a cooler it is.

Mugen 5 are good but PCGH edition fans max 800rpm severely handicaps it's potential. Probably won't clear your RAM if that is what you were thinking. I'm still using an old system similar to yours as well as a couple newer ones. Still good systems but about EOF without USB3, fast SATA, bluetooth, etc. My favorite cooler is TRUE Spirit 140 Power standing 171mm tall and 155mm wide with 6x 8mm heatpipes and clears RAM 55mm from center CPU. Not at my work station, but tomorrow I can check your mobo CPU center to RAM spacing if you like.

For sure it's an old system but still surprisingly capable, and a six quid 4 port USB 3 card helps.

Yeh, any info would be helpful, thanks.

Mugen 5 is step below the best and basically there with double priced Noctua NH-U12A.
It simply lacks brand/marketing hype overpricing.

And it's designed for full memory compatiblity with tall DIMMs on both sides of socket:

Normal single fan version is cheaper and 1200rpm fan better extracts performance from fin stack than 800rpm fans:

That would mean the fan would be on pull then?

Thought that wasn't quite as good as push but I stand to be corrected.

Unless bungled up by user during installation process fan is push (+pull if adding another fan) like in any cooler.

I was going by that picture you quoted, with the fan on the left hand side.

But yes, it looks like the fan would miss the ram slots on the right (where mine are) with the fan on the right (in push) also.

When viewed from top edge of mobo:

Here we have "reviewer" bungling it up:

With second fan (for push-pull) it would have to be lifted like 1½cm higher in case of tall heatspreader DIMMs in quad channel boards.
Buth if case has 170mm room for CPU cooler rising fan shouldn't be problem with Mugen 5 being 154.5mm high with fan(s) at stock position.
Anyway fin stack is only medium dense and single good pressure capable fan (like Arctic P12) would likely extract most cooling performance.
