Air Combat Games

I intended to start a post regarding modern combat flight sims after talking to a friend about Microprose games on the Amiga. I would love a new Gunship-like game and Black Shark has peeked my interest (as has the mention of an A-10 sim).

I never gave Lock-on much of a look due to performance on my system when it came out. Is it worth looking at now?

I hear falcon 4 was a good realism flight game if ppl want that type of game.

Hmm that IL2 looks interesting i wonder if theres some mods to update the textures to high res ones or somit.

Too late. I am downloading it. God Damn Credit Cards

You naughty naughty boy:p. But....you won't regret it. It's amazing. I've had it for a few weeks now and the flying side of it is sorted I think but I still can't fire missiles that have locked onto a target. Normally that would annoy me but in this case it doesn't because I feel like im actually learning to use the systems as opposed to pressing a sequence of buttons.

Yeah, thats my kind of game TBH. Take the PMDG 744 and MD-11, I can now start em up, programme the FMC's etc etc with my eyes closed, and like you say, it gives you a feeling of actually knowing what your doing.

Just been delving into the FAQ section of the DCS website and not only are they working on the A-10 but also on an AH-64 Apache sim with twin cockpit multiplayer option :D

Might have to start looking for a decent joystick and throttle setup.

Any games like Lock On (same era, I guess) but that don't require me to be a qualified Mig-29 fighter pilot before I install the game?

Lock On is pretty basic (as I remember it). As long as you have a decent joystick with the ability to control the rudders and throttles you should be fine. Theres obviously a few key commands you will need to remember but nothing too complex :)

DCS:- Black Shark is from the Developers of Lock On. A bit more realistic than Lock ON.

Edit:- beaten to it..... :)

A bit realistic, they are almost real!!

Everytime I look at a hard core flight simulator, I also look at the terrain and buildings apart from the avionics. If you take a look at the demonstration in SimHQ, the city scenary is so real and deatiled. I will not hesitate to buy it, actually I wish 24Mar would be tomorow!

Same here! Now with my current rig, I can easily get to 60FPS which is great. Do get a copy of it, it's really cheap now. On cheap sales here in Hong Kong I can get a copy like HKD90 somethin glike 12 USD or 10 quids.

You can buy it and download it from the web site. Yes its a bit more expensive but from what I understand it's the same as the retail version. They will be releasing a manual seperatly at a later date as well. That will probably cost more than the retail version on DVD I imagine.

I been playing it all day. Can fly it fine and land on buildings etc, need to learn how to fire it up next :P

It is an amazing sim in every aspect. It looks stunning, sounds stunning, plays stunning.

Its a great Helo sim worth every penny. you can make BS as real as you want,i mysel went into it deep so learing will take a while which is good value for money. that reminds me got to get round to learn how to land.

Are their any decent lookin ww2 fighter plane games with nice ground enviroments thats not uber realistic just easy to control like up down left right go stop and fire.

try fighterace mate, its constantly updated and really good fun. havent played it for about a year or so, but was horribly addicted at the time

Late reply but, i can second Fighterace.

Very addictive game, graphics arent up there with the likes up il2 but the gameplay is superb.

My nick is Chiggy or __REZ__99__ on there :)

Heard that there is to be a WW11 flight sim out late October called " Storm of War, Battle of Britain "

Looks good and you can re-order from play.com for £17.99....
I prefer this type of flight sim where you have to battle for position and actually have to shoot down the enemy, rather than fire a missile some 6 km at a blip on a radar, and never actually see the kill....
