air cooler for i7

Really depends what you're trying to achieve, if you want just a cooler to replace the stock, a Hyper 212 Evo is probably the most popular and more than capable.

Trying to OC? You may need to consider behemoth air cooler, it would be wise to probably look at AIO at this scenario.

No need for an AIO unless you don't have the space for an air cooler or you're after one for aesthetic reasons. Decent AIOs and air coolers perform similarly.

If you're overclocking and have a big enough case, I can recommend the Alpenfohn Olymp.

Cryorig R1/R1 Ultimate is nipping at the heels of the Noctua, and looks far better. If you care for aesthetics, it would be the better choice, and is much easier to fit than the Dark Rock Pro. Just check you have clearance in your case.

I've got a Cryorig R1 Ultimate and it is a lovely cooler and it's great at keeping temps in check, only issue I have is it blocks the first pcie slot on my mobo.

Have used Noctua in the past and have no complaints (apart from fan colours :D). It worked well and was quiet at the same time :)

Yeh the noctua is a little on the fuggly side :p

Doesn't bother me though as I'm not a case window kind of guy :p

If that's the case for anyone, I'd always go with the Noctua D15. It's really the king of air CPU coolers, and looks aside, it can't be faulted, and super easy to fit as well. D14 comes a close second, but I think the R1 pips it. That is bigger and has potential RAM clearance issues with X99 though, and possibly PCI-E socket interference on some mobos. Cryorig have an origami thing you can download and make from their website though, which is super handy.

Would agree about fitting a Noctua cooler, there system is superb, I didn't swear once ;) :D

The D15 is a quality item. The packaging, instructions and materials all scream quality. It also performs very well and is whisper quiet. Only downside really is that it is enormous.

The fact it's fugly as hell is a slight downside also, if you care about such things. It's actually just the fans... if they ever sorted their colour scheme out I'm sure they'd see sales figures double lol!

I use a Noctua NH-U14S to cool a six core processore (i7 4960X) and it keeps temps down to 3 degrees (currently 21 degrees) above ambiant whilst being silent. It is not as big/heavy as the D15 but is not far away from the cooling capabilites of the larger model.
