Air flow advice

Hi guys, my pc case doesn’t have a grill at the front, it’s got a single intake fan which is faced against the inside of the front. Is this a problem for air flow? I’ve upgraded my cpu recently and it’s been getting quite hot, I’ve ordered a new cpu cooler so hoping that will sort it without replacing the case. But seems a bit odd that the fan is sitting against the case and not a grill. Thanks

How hot is quite hot?

Does the case have vents at the side - at the front - where it can draw in air?

Do you have a rear venting fan?

Do you know the case name?

Have you changed from a stock cooler to a tower cooler (cooler name)? (the new cooler could resolve the issue if changing from stock.)

Thanks for your reply. This is the question, I’m not sure where it’s drawing air from really. It was a pre build from Overclockers about 18 months ago. Not sure on case name, it has a vent on top and at the back where the exhaust fan is, I’ve ordered the dark rock 4 pro but it hasn’t arrived yet, it’s a 3900xt which is reaching above 80c during gaming. Thanks

Well, the Dark Rock Pro 4 will certainly have a very significant effect on your temps - so would certainly wait before calling final judgement as that's as good as it gets for an air cooler.

I can't see any side vents - if there's none on the other side then it may be drawing from the top and bottom?

You could buy an additional intake if your temps aren't as low as you hoped with the DR4.

Personally I would have preferred an AIO mounted in the top 280mm if one will fit. Alternatively fit the biggest air cooler you can and direct the exhaust straight up and mount a couple of fans in addition at the top to draw the heat out the top. 120mm rear fan blowing in to try to get some air circulating around the VRM. 2 front fans would help as well. Sounds like a lot of fans but they can run fairly slowly with the CPU/Top set to ramp with CPU temp.

Set the ramp to start at 60C for example once you have better cooling so you don't get the constant fan noise as the RPM changes.

The 3900XT is particularly power dense so will always show fairly high temps per core but not so bad when measuring the CPU Die average. Ryzen Master is about the best tool to get an accurate reading but not so great if you to have graphs running in the background. HWiNFO64 CPU Die is good for that.

Actually just looked at the pics for the DRP4 and it's a big un and may bot rotate to vent upwards!

@Joshua muldoon the dark rock pro is to big for that case it's 162.8mm tall.

The case has a max cooler height of 160mm.
Yep - even allowing for certain case tolerances - 3mm may be pushing it. Although you could measure - you may get lucky, not all cases are made equal.

If not you could sub it out for the normal Dark Rock 4 (non Pro) - an equally cool and quiet cooler.

I didn’t see your messages about it being to small Until now, I fitted it yesterday and it’s fine thank god. Not reached above 60c once so hopefully shouldn’t have any other issues. It’s one big cooler though! Still going to get 2 120mm fans to improve it further. Thanks for your help

Your welcome

Can you shut your case ? If no
You could send it back and get something smaller like this.

Yes but doubt there’s a mm left between case and cooler. How lucky am I! Just waiting on my 3080 now then I’m all complete! Hopefully this month. I’m still really new to pcs but I’m slowly learning.

That's a result .

Are you happy with the look of your pc personally I love the look of the cooler.
