Airbus skids off runway into building - at least 200 dead

The TAM airlines Airbus A320 is thought to have slid off the end of the runway as it landed in very wet conditions. Concerns had been raised about the safety of the runway during heavy rain. There had been persistent, heavy rain in the two hours preceding the accident.
. . .
The BBC's Gary Duffy in Sao Paolo says the weather has been bad for much of the day and there has been concern for some time about safety at Congonhas during heavy rain. In February, a judge briefly banned flights in and out of the airport, which is the busiest in Brazil.

Pilots had complained that water was pooling on the surface of the landing strip, making braking difficult and occasionally causing planes to skid out of control. Remedial work, including laying a new surface, has been carried out in recent months.

However, a much smaller plane skidded off the runway before stopping on grass in similar weather conditions on Monday. No-one was injured in the incident.

Air safety in Brazil has been a major issue since a crash last year when a passenger plane collided with an executive jet over the Amazon, our correspondent says. Some 154 people died in that incident, which was, at the time, the worst air crash in the country's history.
The phrase "air safety" and the word "mañana" spring to mind.

I believe that a similar cavalier attitude to air safety exists in many countries around the world, including Russia, China and much of Africa - at least we get some things right in the UK :)

OK guys where is a nice safe place to store all this fuel
I know boss, how about at the end of the runway
Great idea Pedro
That's what I thought - it seems incredible.

The airport is notorious for having short, slippery runways, CNN's Miles O'Brien reported. The runway was recently resurfaced but the cutting of grooves to channel rainwater off the pavement had not been completed, he said.

A Brazilian court in February banned large jets at the busy airport because of safety concerns, The Associated Press reported.

But an appeals court overruled the ban, saying it would hurt business and that the safety problems did not warrant halting air traffic, according to AP.
Unbelievable, safety doesn't get tightened until something like this happens.. profits comes first :(

So sad...apparently, the media there have clips of other pilots warning each other about the slippery surface!

It seems that the runway had been relaid, but due to pressure they did not groove it  It was raining for days before this accident...

Similar situation at Bristol airport last year, which did cause one aircraft to leave the runway IIRC, but no injuries and only minor damage to the aircraft. The airport management got savaged in some sections of the press for it, apparently not only was the runway not re-grooved but nothing was done to inform pilots that the runway would be more slippery than usual because of it. Some airlines even boycotted BRS until the runway was re-grooved!

This wasn't that long ago, it was really wierd not having any planes flying overhead for a few days.

It's all happening in South America. An Embraer left the runway in Colombia today too.

Shame.

There is a distinct difference in the safety culture in South America compared to our own. Not so long ago they also had a mid air colission.

So far there have been at lest three incidents of this kind at the Congonhas airport in sao paulo, a small jet slid of the runway and last year a "jumbo" slid of the end of the runway (the very same place as this one), luckily that one did not fall down the steep banking at the end of the runway.

There are many different problems with the air traffic in brasil and not just with the controllers going on strike, the runway at Congonhas has been resurfaced twice, first time round, after it was finished, plans were aquaplaning on landing and many pilots refused to land there, but then it took a Judge to decide, in court, that the surface be fixed and re-laid and unfortunately this appears to have been rushed and therefor not perfect.
