Airbus skids off runway into building - at least 200 dead

In my experience, 28 years in aircraft maintenance, including 4 1/2 years on RAF specialist unit assisting UK Air Accident Investigation Branch (including picking up unrecognisable body parts), these are a few things to ponder over.
How many news programmes, airport series etc. have you seen with passengers whinging and moaning about flight delays due to technical problems, adverse weather conditions ?
Do you really want mechanics to take short cuts because, quote "we have passengers waiting at the terminal."
How much will you moan if your flight is diverted to another airport ?
Aircraft accidents are almost always the result of muliple failures within the system.
Get used to it, unfortunately we'll have 1 sooner or later, much closer to home !

Aye.

Judging by that picture at the bottom of the news report, there's no way I'd be living at the end of that runway.

What about at the end of the runway at any airport? look at Heathrow for example.

You should see the airport at Rio de Janeiro;) if a plane were to over shoot there it would wipe out a lot more houses as there is a small mountain at the end of the airport covered with houses.

I imagine that when airports were built then a lot of the houses around were not there or because the air traffic was not as busy it was not really a problem.

I agree. Short cuts and commercial pressures lead to incidents.

very sad news indeed - i have a brazilian friend who is mad into aviation like myself and he told me many stories about the differences of safety between UK and there. Just started temporary job as a flight dispatcher and its always terrible to hear of any aviation accidents.
