Hi

I have an Asus Rampage Formula With a QX6850 Extreme CPU @ stock (3.0GHz)
4GB PC8500 Crucial Ballistix DDR 2
2x WD Raptor 150 in Raid 0
HIS Radeon 3870x2

Coretemp @ Idle (i.e. as I'm writing this, PC has been on an hour or two) shows 49 47 46 46 for each of the four cores respectively. The CPU cooler is a Tuniq tower, and my Case fans are 4 (space for a 5th but drive cage not fitted atm) 80mm Vantec Thermoflow fans and a 120MM Vantec above the PSU. Now I know the 3870X2 is a heat monster and from having the side off, the CPU temps are a few degrees lower, is there anything I can do to improve things slightly (not that I'm having problems at all... just wondering.

Fan air Directios are in/up (Front) and Out/Down (Rear)

thoughts ?

Andrew

I'm stuck with the 80 mm fans as 120's wont fit in an 80MM space. I suppose I could try and find a windowed side panel for my case, however it sounds like a new case might be an easier option in the longer term.

Case is a Chieftec MA01- WD Full tower

Fan layout is as follows:

1)120MM
2)PSU
3)80MM 5) 80MM
4)80MM 6) 80MM - disconnected ATM

1-4 being at the back of the case blowing air out (12OMM at top)
5 and 6 Pulling air in at the front.

Is it easy to install new case fans. my case only came with one hole for fans and it came with the fan.

is it a case of cutting a hole in the side of the case and installing it yourself?

try reducing the number of fans in use.

Start with the 120mm at the back and 80mm at the front, then 2 at the front, 1 at he back etc, see which combo suits you're case the best.

Hows all the cabling/wiring inside the case, neat/tidy and out the way of the airflow ?

will try unplugging various combos and see what happens
Cabling and wiring is erm... going to be tidied up when my mate visits next week :D At the moment its just "plugged in to get everything working", so isnt great, and I've notriced that with the tuniq installed my 2 12v (4 pin adapters) are a bit of a squeeze around it to get them plugged in. Power Supply is an OCZ GameXStream 850w, but mahy have to change as it only has 2x 6pin PCIE connectors, if I ever want to put a sxecond 3870x2 in I'd swap it for one with 2x6 and 2x8, but thats in future.

PS Telford, Shropshire ? Know it well, was born in Shrewsbury and lived near Bridgnorth (Highley) for 8 1/2 years till family came back to Scotland :)

I've just modded my case & have cut a hole & added a second silent 80mm fan in the side of the case right down opposite the side exhaust of my GX2, this fan is pulling air out & stopping it rising up the case, the original side fan which is opposite the CPU is now blowing air in, Q6600 idle temp right now 14c , never goes above 20 playing Crysis at max , GX2 idles at 47 & 48, I cut another 80mm hole in the back of the case low down near the front which blows air in & there is a 120mm at the back as per usual. All are Akasa silent fans & they really are silent.
Rivatuner controls the GX2 fans so they keep the temp below 60c at all times when playing games, fan never goes above 70% so far.
I also used rivatuner to add two hotkeys for 100% & 40% so I can instantly speed up or slow the fan at any time just by tapping keys I never use in numpad.
The benefit of this is when you finish playing a game & want to turn off the PC you can give a quick 100% burst to the fan so it cools the GPU right down in less than a minute :D

erm - 14c for a Q6600 at idle? Max 20 on semi-load? Is your rig outside the bedroom window blowing in the wind cuz those temps are way below ambient!!

I think his location is the artic or he's getting some duff temperature readings. :p

In saying that he hasn't stated what is colling the cpu so it might be true.;)

I don't go in for giving false info guys, I'm 62 years old & gave up exagerating many years ago! what you see is perfectly true, the freezerpro blows straight onto the 150mm fan & there is a side case fan blowing straight at the mobo , if I take the side off the case the temps go up 4c, I have the PC inthe back room which never gets the sun, today is warmer than recent & temps are a little higher, after 3 hours the CPU is 17c alto the GX2 has remained constant
