Airline Case

I think I'll go for a Peli 1510. It's just for 2 bodies, 2 Flash units and 4 lenses. That aluminum case is just too much plus the weight.

Yeah 1510 and I ordered from Jit Pak.

Be careful though the empty weight of the 1510 is around 6KG and most budget airlines have a carry on weight limit of 10KG. The exception of that is Easyjet :)

I got 20+kg in mine :D

Just ordered the padded dividers one before i've seen your post. Now that I've checked my ticket, I got 30Kg checked in luggage allowance and a 1 piece7Kg carry on luggage allowance on Singapore Airlines. That means, i can't use it. Ohh Me.

You could risk it. As long as you don't look like you are straining to carry your bag a lot of airlines won't even check. I managed to get on with 15kg luggage before when the limit was 5kg :)

But then again, I may have just been lucky.

I have gotten away a few times with other airlines but only because I got a "Flyer" card with them. This is my first with Singapor airlines. Well, Whats the odds if put the lens in check in luggage wrapped in a towel or jacket maybe?

Stick the camera round your neck at check-in? Get a lens pouch (£15) and stick it on your belt?

We've flown with Lowepro Vertex 200s many times before, and they are ideal - great capacity and externally they fit within the standard carry on dimensions.

I'd add that if you are taking it onboard with you, do you really need something as strong and sturdy as a Peli Case over a normal camera bag?

If you were checking it into the hold, it would be a no-brainer of course.

For one thing, with that much weight, you don't need to carry it on your back. Secondly, price difference is not that much when you consider the longevity of the case and the assurance that even if you banged your case, your stuff is well protected. I've got a LowePro 350 and a ThinkTank Retro 30. I can use them for a days strolling and snapping, but I don't think it offers the same protection as much as the Peli does when in long haul transport. I would still bring my Retro with me and use it in my destination.

I've carried more than you have in that case in my Retrospective 30 on an airline before, of course it's heavy, but I'm not going to be carrying everything around with me the whole time I'm away once there. Airports and travel aren't too taxing either because you have things like trolleys. Plus as you've said yourself, you still need to take a camera bag with you if you intend to walk around and shoot.

Ultimately I suppose it all comes down to personal preference and whether you are actually going out to shoot on a paid job. A Pro friend of mine checks all his kit into the hold (insured obviously) in Peli cases. He then puts each case inside a cheaper holdall bag, so that way it doesn't look like it contains any kind of expensive equipment, which a Peli case alludes too.
