Just used Opodo, got some prices First time using it though. However, the booking reference they gave me could then also be used on the proper airlines website
Other than that, try using the BA website, their prices are relatively good and the interface is pretty useful for finding a date/ticket you want
I agree, sometimes its worth checking on the actual airlines website, also http://www.farecompare.com/ is ment to be quite good but ive not used them myself yet.
ITA matrix (searches airline websites as well) kayak and skyscanner. All have different benefits and cons, such as kayak and ITA doing open jaw tickets and skyscanner being much better for "I feel like going on holiday next weekend, any cheap flights to somewhere interesting?".
