Airport Security..

On leaving Luton Airport the other week for Spain we sent through a series of vigerous security checks which included:

Taking off shoes
Checking inside mouth (inc babies)
Checking hair
Checking babies nappies (Both on him and the ones in the bag)
Tasting the bottled baby water/milk.
Opening 3 sealed jars of baby food and tasting
Opening 2 sealed carton of pre-made baby milk and tasting

This excludes the normal checks. I can live with this. I've nothing to hide so it's not a problem. I did ask the security lady (politely) why the opening and tasting. Her response was that it is possible to inject explosives in to liquids and jars.

So why the post? The reason I'm mentioning this is that there was nothing like this in Spain when were actually coming back into the country??? Just the normal "walk through" check and that was it. I was shocked because it seems a bit strange and a half hearted attempt to combat terrorism.

So is the extra securty really necessary? Is just political paranoia or proper gander trying to restore passenger confidence. I can't help thinking the later.

What do you think?

@ Belfast International - Patted down my 10 month old baby, made me eat sealed POP jars of baby food. Made me eat the dry powdered milk, take off shoes. Patted down my family making bits - Was furious!

But that was one day before the madness at Glasgow, guess where we were flying to?

Anyway after thinking about it, it makes sense, im white, I have a baby - im so not likely to be a terrorist therefore im a perfect cover I guess.

My own experiences in the past fortnight flying from Bristol to Prague and back saw two differences.

I was asked to remove my shoes when flying from Bristol, while I was asked to remove my belt when flying from Prague.

We flew from Stansted to Spain a few weeks ago and checks were pretty ordinary. X-ray carry on luggage, laptop had to be X-rayed separately, metal detector and ban on liquids. No checking peoples mouths, hair etc. They were just picking handfull of people at random to have their shoes X-rayed. I wasn't picked. Security was the same leaving Spain too.

Even we (Customs) get checked by security.. flying and when going airside etc.

Which tbh is infuriating, we are the department that authorises everything about the airport, be it a new car park or new work toilets.
We had a problem with it when it was first introduced. We had popped from our building, which is airside, to get lunch. On the way back we had shoes searched, our liquids taken, and sandwiches picked through. We are fully geared up officers of the crown; of course we are in fact Al Qaida in disguise!

So we arrested the security staff (not officers) under CEMA for impeding an officer in his course of duty (LUCNH!!). We were then subsequently arrested by the police stationed in the airport under terror laws. Took two hours to get us de-arrested. We still not have had clarification back on the situation, regarding conflicting terror legislation and older LE acts like CEMA. Anyone who is working for Customs, has passed the same level of scrutiny as the police for that matter.

That was a mess and a half for the Higher Ex Officer to sort out!

Its another classic case of knee jerk reactions imo.

ROFL, that is AWESOME. Well, it's actually slightly scary and worrying, but damn funny none the less. Did you get to eat your lunch? (and in one way, it's good that it isn't one set of rules for us, another for you, but it's still retarded)

Nah I never eat it, not after that grease balls finger had worked its way through it  ****

Thing is we normally have powers over the police, like to search their vehicle if in course of duty(which they do not have in kind). Situations like this cloud certain issues.
