Akasa Integral External Drive Case

My son had one of these for a while and reported it didn't work. Yesterday I dropped a drive from my machine into it and found that the system recognised a 'mass storage device' but could not talk to it as it thought it needed to be formatted. I did not go that far as there were 2 partitions on it and some data.

Any ideas what we might have done wrong? It uses SATA connections inside and has ESATA and USB connections on the outside. I used it with USB as I would like some backup storage for nmy laptop but this box wasn't talking.

Does anything show up in disk management? One other thing to try is going to device manager and showing hidden devices then removing all the hidden ones.
