I have an Akasa Integral USB IDE HDD enclosure which works fine.

However I am concered with hot how the drive gets. After say an hours use the drive is hot to touch.

I have just installed a new drive into the enclosure as the other packed up and I am now thinking was it heat related.

Should I modify the enclosure and add a fan
What have other people experienced

Cheers

A lot of people will tell you here that hard drives need really good cooling and I used to think this was true. I bought 4 Zalman heatpipe coolers after I had a failure recently.

Then somebody pointed out the google report on hard drives (HUUUUGE sample size), which found that hot/overly hot drives weren't much more likely to fail. Mechanical failure I think was touted as a bigger reason.

Cheers :-)

Do you guys 'n Girls recomend that the enclosues are placed flat or placed vertically on the stand? Or does it make little difference?
