Hi,

I am looking to get the Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz Quad Core Processor, over clocked to 4.6GHz and would like some opinions on cooling systems.

Would the Akasa Venom CPU Cooler be sufficient, or should I go for the Corsair Hydro H80?

Thanks. :)

I run the same CPU at 4.6ghz with the Akasa, so yes. (See my steam profile for rig info)

Ok, OC advised the H60 themselves over the Akasa that's why I am a bit confused now on what to get. Taking what they said on board I was going to go for the H80, but now am confused again :(

Im running on a akasa Nero s and have kept my x3 720 @3.5ghz under 50oc on prime, im not sure weather the venom is better than the nero, but thats in the same price range, to be safe on air id get something like the thermaltake frio or the titan fenrir

Edit i lied i have the akasa nero s Premier, the best version

Thanks. Was going to get it pre-built by OC, that's why it was a choice out of the two coolers.

H80 will probably outperform the venom on load temps and high overclocks. That said the venom is a good performer with two fans. Phone OCUK you really have 3 options IMO:

Venom + extra viper fan £50-£55 (vipers are on offer today)
Silver Arrow £55 (cooling on a similar par to the H80)
H80 £80

Oh hang on, just noticed there are 3 or 4 venom revisions (nano/pico/voodoo and just a regular 'venom') which one is it OCUK are offering?

212+ with a venom strapped on keeps me below 50c, in mid summer, with pwm on.

Since heatpipes in cpu coolers there's been no advancement in them, it just comes down to surface area and airflow, which is whi a good air cooler will perform the same as a good single unit liquid cooler. The liquid cooler however has the advantage of expelling hot air directly from the case, an air cooler will always leave some behind.

Ahhh, I see. Some useful information there. The room where the computer will be is not the best for keeping cool, its quite small and compact so it heats up quickly with things like PS3, TV, Computer, etc. Also, the surrounding area around the base unit is not as open as I would like, so maybe H80 is better solution for me? Expelling hot air directly from the case seems like something I would need, as I'm pretty sure the internals would benefit more from it. Just to mention I am proposing on using the Coolermaster CM690-II Advanced Case.

The recommended direction for a sealed loop cooler is blowing hot air into the case, so cool air is pulled through the radiator, into the case then expelled ideally through top mounted exhaust fans. Granted this does change from setup to setup.

Yeah no doubt, thinking about it, as long as the top fans are intake and the radiator is pulling from the case that should work about the same in theory. Maybe even better...

Cool. I think I will stick with H80 as it seems more beneficial with location of the base unit. Don't know too much about H80 though.

All I will say of the H80 is you may want to change out the stock fans if noise is a concern. Other than that its an excellent cooler.

I'm not too concerned about noise, but am not sure how loud is loud :(. I am aware that I don't have to fill the cooler with liquid as it is sealed because I did ask about that, however not sure how reliable it is or how much life expectancy it has, i.e. is it the same as a regular fan cooler?

If not longer, the H80 comes with a 5 year warranty. I know Noctua usually have a 72 month (6 year) warranty, but I think Akasa is only a 1 year while thermalright is 3 years.

With a large warranty your set for a good few builds.

As for the noise, try it your self at first, see what you think, they are only at their loudest under 'performance' mode. Balanced mode should yeild lower noise but at higher temps.

Great stuff. When switching modes do you have to open the case or is it controlled via software?

Until Corsair release the 'Corsair Link' you have to open it up to change the modes. I just set mine to Performance and left it, the fans only hit full speed when the water temp (not cpu temp) hit 40c from what I understand.
