The bottom of this cooler is the strangest thing i have ever seen!

there is no solid plate?! have people installed this as you would normally? a little blob and then just push down?

Any advice would be much appreciated

It's a direct contact heatpipe base, but you just install it as normal. Nice blob in the middle and press down evenly.

The base should be even, but if it's not, you could apply a tiny bit of paste to the base of the cooler.

+1

I would recommend putting in slightly more paste than normal as the direct contact HS's have a small gap between the heat pipe and the base, the TIM should be thick enough to fill this gap.

Hi, I agree with burrell about putting some paste on the heatsink base, I think that it should be applied with a credit card to fill the spaces and to remove the excess. As for how to apply the paste to the CPU have a look at the Arctic website and follow their suggestions for whatever CPU you have.
I have been playing with the various mounting positions for a Venom in an Antec 300 case and have found that mounting the cooler with the fan at the bottom blowing out through the top vent produces cooler results than having it mounted with the fan blowing towards the rear vent.

Hi, DiCe!, on your browser enter arctic silver.com top of the list will be their home page, click on instructions and you will be asked to select AMD or INTEL for the type of CPU you are using. Just follow the prompts and you will see a detailed explanation of how to apply thermal compound.
Cheers
