My Hyperx Alpha just broke so I'm looking for a new headset that I will be using on my PC for gaming, do I need amp for it work? I have msi b450 tomahawk max motherboard.
Any other headsets I should be considering I was looking at the Sennheiser G300/g500?

I'm using the same headphones (702) and board without an amp.

I have had to turn the windows volume up quite high but they sound ok to me.

I suspect I should be using an amp to get the best from them, but they work without.

They can along with the rest of that family do with an amp, they are pretty power and current hungry headphones.

will be able to drive them off the motherboard but need to drive up the volume, a dictated amp will be noticeable.

what motherboard do you have?

I have an ASUS Strix Laptop that can drive the K702/K712's. Actually I just tested the K702's on my old smartphone and they were usable (don't need to go near max volume). But they are definitely improved by being plugged into my Sound Blaster X7.

If you are on a budget, I would buy 'Syba Sonic USB' as recommended by Zeos as "does the job". If I was buying headphones anything more than 32 ohm.

AKG K702 come alive with decent amplification - not just from a volume point of view but sound wise. They tend to sound really thin if not amped correctly.

I'd say something like the JDS Atom would be perfect but have no personal experience of it as I've used a Creative G6 (and a G3) with mine.

If I was to buy an amp/dac at the £150 price range I think I would go down the route of the FiiO K5 Pro - seems great for the price.

A good AMP and DAC usually makes a difference. Take my K712 Pro as an example - using just the mobo I can hear sound from it at good volumes but it is a bit hollow. I find there to be a good step up from my mobo to my Soundblaster AE-5. But then hooking it up to my AMP/DAC of SMSL SP200 and Topping D50s is fabulous for me and really brings out the best in it.
