Albufeira

It is split into 2 parts, the old town is really quite nice, the new town ( strip ) ia a pretty standard brit based resort that doesn't have much going for it

The strip is really 1 road which runs at a right angle to the beach, the nearest end to the beach is lively becoming more family type stuff as you move away

The old town is a sqaure with lots of narrow streets and has a few nice restaurants and bars though you need to explore a bit as many are hidden away

I am lucky to have a relative with property there so I have been quite a few times, as rotty said, the new town is your typical strip with lots of bars etc though isnt as lively as Magaluf and the likes.
The old town is very pleasant and I find the Portugese people very friendly and welcoming unlike in some Spanish resorts I have been to in the past. There is a great Mexican place in the old town near the beach so if you like mexican food then take the time out to go, there is also another restaraunt on the beach front that do excellent steaks, its quite pricey but worth it if you want to spoil yourself, another good place is an Italian that has about three floors on the side of ths cliff where you can sit outside and enjoy the view.
Its quite pricey at the minute though so take plenty of cash.

Just got back from a week in the Algarve, literally yesterday. We stayed in Guia, just out from the town. Glad we did. We spent one night in old town Albuferia, and that was enough.

Walking about was akin to walking down the main strip in Kavos or Magaluf at peak season, restauranteurs haranguing you for business and when you finally find a seat you're then hassled by some little gimp walking the streets trying to sell you dope, coke or smack. We were there for 4 hours, got offered drugs no less than 20 times - even during our meal. Very disappointing, and very underwhelmed with the whole experience. We didn't go back.

On the flipside, the weather out there at the moment is awesome and if you can get out to Guia there's a couple of lovely beaches, a great restaurant called Tia Maria, and a bit further on from that there's an English bar called Scooby Doo's run by a very nice chap called Simon. He offers a pickup/collection, and a breakfast drop off in the morning, and the ribs are awesome. After our horror night out in town that was a welcome change of pace!

For the record I love experiencing other cultures and walks of life but Albuferia just felt like Amsterdam at peak tourist season for drugs with tacky music, mediocre food, and a "watch your wallet" feel.

Going with the mrs, some sounds good, other bits not so much..... I will try and go with an open mind, so glad the weather is nice at the moment, i will report back my findings.
