I am going to LA with my daughters at the end of June, the first 5 days we are going to drive to San Francisco before back to LA for the last 5 days, we really want to visit Alcatraz, I remember years ago a friend going and having to book months before they went, I just wondered if anyone has been recently and whether you can just book it when you get there?

The problem is I have decided not to plan the first 5 days of the trip, so im not sure exactly what day we would be going there.

Also looking for advise for other things to do while we are in the area, family friendly obviously!

You doing the nighttime one?

It rocks! Loved it spooky they give you time to wonder around yourself (were in the shower room ourselves it was great some cells were unlit and very spooky.) Loved it.

Only thing I would say is wrap up well as even in summer SF can be cool at night if the fog comes in.

Went for the afternoon one, my daughter has already told me she's terrified to go there but wants to (she's 15).

Im trying to decide whether to stay in the area for a couple of days, or whether i should just stay somewhere else in SF for a couple of nights and just use public transport to get down to the sightseeing areas.

Any recommendations for hotels in the area?

Any recommendations for where to stay in San Fran for a couple of days, would be sharing a room with my daughter, I would need parking but the hotels around the fishermans wharf charge about $40 a night for parking which is ludicrous!

Stay in the centre somewhere near Union Square it puts ou right in the heart of the city, the docks are nice for a visit and some lunch but I wouldn't want to have stayed out that way. Public transport is brilliant and the trams are a tourist attraction in themselves.

Parking is expensive in San Fran it's pretty unavoidable.

The Best Western - Americania (stayed there twice now)

Good value for money and a 5 minute walk to Union Square. (ignore the homeless people, they're everywhere in San Fran!)

Definately go to the top of the Twin Peaks too. Amazing views of the City, Gate bridge and Alcatraz. Oh and Mrs Doubtfire's house!
