Alert notifications via using "@" ?

When people reply to a thread and say something like @ShiWarrior
are you supposed to get a notification ?

all my settings under "alert notifications" are ticked
but i never get one?

how do i get them ? need to test this

i.e.

if someone does @ShiWarrior in a thread i haven't posted in, am i supposed to get notified ?
