As per the title I have only ever seen the films as per when they were on TV. I have just bought the Anthology to get some viewing in before I go and see Prometheus in June.

It looks like there are two versions on the boxset for each film. Orgininal and the Directors cut.

However the directors cur of 'Alien' is actually shorter than the original, any thoughts which I should watch?

Thanks

Definitely watch the SE/DC of Aliens and Alien 3, haven't watched the DC of Alien, so I can't comment on that.

Anyone know why the Directors cut of Alien is 6 mins shorter? Will go for the DC as per the advice, not seen them in years! :-)

I started on my boxset last night - hadn't seen Alien in soooo long but it was good - really looking forward to Aliens next

Been through them all last week as well (as part of preparation for Prometheus). Few things I've noticed.

Quality of script (we all knew that) but oddly - acting and also film restoration - diminishes with each next part.

Quadrilogy should be duology. You know it's true. We should just move the last two to "extended universe", and box set them together with AvP. ;)

First two movies, were fantastic, even more so than a lot of CG movies now, because there is so little chroma key/green (blue at the time) screen used. And real life sets and models, despite being very basic and rough - work very well. But when they did use chroma key. Omg. I don't know why it's such a surprise to me (we've all seen the comical Star Trek "veeger" motion picture from the same year, right?), but man - even Ridley and Cameron couldn't do them for toffee. Opening scenes of Alien - the introduction of the Nostromo - and departure from LV-426 in Aliens are best examples - it's literally like someone was manually dragging transparencies in front of the projector to create motion. Oddly - it gets the worst and borderline comical in Alien 3 SE finale where superbad chroma key effect runs at 5 frames per second just so you can see precisely how bad it is.

Cannot believe Alien is 33 years old. Living proof that script is more important than any special effects. Watch and learn, movie makers, watch and learn.

I seem to remember the DC of Aliens being a fair bit longer, which makes the run up to actually encountering the aliens too slow.

For the life of me I couldn't understand how they cut out the entire plot about Ripley loosing her daughter from the time she was in space, it gave a whole new meaning to her connection with Newt for me.
