Alien Swarm - free Valve game

Hehe, well i must say recently i've become a major Chainsaw whore, the Chainsaw having an insanely high DPS (31x2 per second and i think Vegas gets an 52x2 per second) for its unlimited ammo supply, its great fun lobbing freeze grenades at Shield Bugs and moving in to chainsaw them to pieces. Unfortunely i'm very reckless with it :p

Though i guess again with the variation on enemy spawns on Insane, Chainsaw will get me killed more than anything...

If you're good with the chainsaw then I'd imagine you would be okay. I've never really had much look taking out parasites with it though :s

The chainsaw's damage output is quite impressive. It actually hits more than twice per second from what I've heard - not sure how much more but the numbers were a bit crazy :)

Possibly, its hard to put much faith in it when it lists a reload time of 3.1s on it despite having no ammo and as such, no reload.

Can't say i find it advisable to chainsaw Parasites or Bombs though. I think i have found particularly lethal is (while trying to get Blast Radius), lobbing a grenades fowards at the spawner and a few bomb bugs as i rush towards it, expecting the grenade to kill the bugs, only for my health to somehow go from full to nothing in the space of a fraction of a second. No idea what was up there...

The flying ones can be a pain to Chainsaw too, better off just shooting them really.

Yeah...that fits in with my experiences too. Shame that there's not some technique to make chainsaw a bit more viable for all situations really. This is kind of the reason I don't take it though, I'm way too lazy to switch weapons much :p

New update

Alien Swarm Adds AI Director, New Difficulty
Press Releases - Valve 14:08
Since release, we've received a ton of feedback and feature requests from the Alien Swarm community. The most requested additions are more variety and greater difficulty.

With that in mind, we've added "Onslaught" mode, which introduces an AI Director that dynamically generates swarms of aliens based on several factors, such as the squad's stress level. Onslaught works with any difficulty setting and ensures no mission plays the same way twice.

Speaking of difficulty, we've also added a "Brutal" difficulty level for those of you who told us "Insane" wasn't insane enough. How brutal is Brutal? Nobody on the Alien Swarm team has managed to complete a mission on it.

If for some crazy reason Brutal is still too easy for you, there's now a "Hardcore Friendly Fire" toggle. When enabled, friendly fire deals full damage immediately, flamethrowers set teammates on fire much faster, and turrets will hurt you if get caught in their crossfire. HCFF truly tests your team’s ability to work as a elite squad. Coordinating movement and firing lines become an even more integral part of the game.

Finally, to reward the most dedicated players, we've added 3 new IAF Promotion Ranks: Platinum Star, Osmium Star, and the coveted Iridium Medallion.

Seriously i've not even done Expert yet...

Brutal and onslaught should be worth a try :)

Hard Onslaught is bad enough... we just went through the last level again (public) after failing twice and right at the start on the walkway to the first bomb trigger i run past 2 allies backpeddling and wonder why and run head first into a Shield Bug.

Not to mention the AI Director is just stupid. Every so often you get a swarm of the standard alien and by swarm i mean about 7 of them at the same time. Basically because of the short view distance if they rush the wrong player you're ****ed, its just made the Flamethrower situation even worse, now you almost need it to survive the sudden rushes because only that, the Vindicator or stun/freeze grenades will see you through it.

Brutal isn't that much harder than insane - though still damn good fun.

I've not tried onslaught yet. I imagine that's where the real difficulty is :)

Hardcore FF is great fun. Especially when you're with a clan who try to blame you because 1 of them walked in front of you (when i hadn't moved because i was waiting for the door to open that had aliens behind it) and as such i blew his head off with a single Vindicator shot... then shortly after another 1 starts attacking me with his Autogun prompting me to shoot him too...

But damn is it unforgiving... definatly not a good idea for pubs.

Hardcore FF is great fun

We had a Brutal/HCFF game last night, and the first pub to join choose a grenade launcher and flamethrower. Suffice to say he didn't last long :p

Next person to join took a welder as his tertiary option - awesome choice sir!

I have to say, Brutal definitely makes the game much more fun - it's actually quite a challenge, whereas you can speed run on hard relatively easily.

Are you deriding the welding tool?

It can be really handy for sealing off doors and attack routes

..but it's not a good choice when the level already has two welding tools as pickups on the floor. Almost every other choice is better - possibly even the flashlight :p

Seriously though, I can't think of any level where a welding tool would be more useful than a stim pack, damage amp or freeze grenades.

It's far better to not block doors to be honest. All that does is allow a horde to build up and then you have to deal with them all at once rather than just a steady trickle.

That said, I've still not completed everything on Brutal yet (just Insane) so if you've had more luck with Brutal mode and the welder perhaps I'll have a look at it :)

That guy sucked.

Who was that cool guy that TK'd you right at the end of the Surface Bridge level though? He was pretty damn cool. Think his name was FrenchTart or something.

Since when is dealing with them all at once a problem if you're prepared? Besides, there aren't many places maps where a Welder is truly useful but on those it can be extremely helpful to not have to look behind you all the time. More so if you're leaving the area soon.

It's easier to deal with a steady trickle. In Brutal the drones take a hell of a lot more damage so unless you've got amps and/or a very well organised team, steady trickle with at least one person keeping an eye on behind works well.

Tefal + HC FF mode = Everyone dead

The back of my head hurts from all the times he shotguned me
