Aliens : Dark Descent

I had a similar experience on a mission I just ran. I was very close to the next threat level where you get wave to fight, and I had one member down who was getting carried. I accidentally got seen and I killed the alien, but it caused the event to start and I was stuck on the upper level of the second mission area, in a room with 3 doors. I quickly set up 2 turrets and welded all the doors, and then all the aliens came. Main door burst open, 5 aliens came in, threw a grenade which took out all but 1 which I killed but then the side doors both got smashed down and 4 more aliens burst in from different sides. I survived, but not before another squad member got his arm torn off and sent into a coma.

Had to get my 2 remaining members to carry the other 2 all the way back to the APC dodging random patrols. Managed to make it back though and everyone got extracted :) Some missions are very tense; it's awesome.

Loving it so far, can be tricky, just done the first full mission, with the squad limping back, gets me in the mood to watch the fill um again :D

Much better now that the voice responses have been toned down, I'd prefer the option to turn them off completely ( in all games not just this one ) but they have at least been reduced enough that they arent as annoying as before.

Still only a few missions into it but so far as I've been bad at overstaying my welcome. Still only one death although that was on the very first mission to the boss. I almost made it back to the apc but one trooper decided to walk for a bit. I do quite like the danger timer preventing me from simply farming the entire map in one go. Less of a fan of the doom timer though, never a big fan of these. If time limits make sense then it should be more of a per mission things or repercussions rather than gameover.

There's a few design choices that I don't like, has a bit of an one man band feel, where things could have been designed "better". It's clear some things are in simply to work around game mechanics such as Tools to do everything. We should be able to wield doors for free but we should only be able to reset once in a mission or some such. ie. A chunk of time passes, you can be found with aliens on the other side or the apc comes under attack and needs to back out. Can only rest in the APC but wield doors to reduce stress. etc.

I can see myself sinking a good bit more time into this but waiting until there's an overhall mod for things. I am enjoying it though.

I'm really enjoying it so far (10 hours in). I find it quite stessful - in a good way. Had a mission earlier where my best Marine was down so one of the remaining marines had to carry them and I also had to escort two visitors out with next to no resources left. It seemed to take forever to get back the APC. Managed it though.....just - and thats what I mean by stressful though. It's really good that an isometric game can generate so much tension and atmosphere.

Pretty chunky update came out today. Really glad they fixed the issue with some members of your squad getting stuck.

is there any point in Lvl up your B team by going to dead hills (once u finish the missions) and triggering massive onslaught

I feel the game is quite weak in allowing you to build a pool of usable marines - if you train them they become exhausted when you stop training them (and can't use them for the next deployment) and the game spams you with events that exhaust your marines - it's really not like XCom at all so I ended up just resting my mains until they were ready and only deploying new marines if I'd lost a veteran in a previous deployment.

So as mentioned earlier in the thread, the gameplay style of this didn't appeal, so I watched a 5 hour abridged playthrough over a week or two.

Story is a bit contrived from older Aliens content and doesn't add a lot new, they get points for effort though.

Not great/not terrible out of 10 based purely on the story.

looks interesting - quite a wide variety of opinion on the game, if not for just starting BG3 I think I'd bite, but as is... will let you guys be more of a guinea pig (will follow this thread )

funny enough the reason i haven't started BG3 is because i'm playing this :)

I finished this in 25hrs and would rate it around a 7/10, but mostly as a huge Aliens geek so probably a 5/10 for a normie. I enjoyed the atmosphere & look of the game, the last level especially highlights how great they were at sticking to HR Giger's designs - holy hell the city looked amazing - but the gameplay is average at best and, whilst I understand the reason for this as a game mechanic, I don't want to fight Aliens and then want to spend the next 5 minutes "managing stress and mental trauma" - god that mechanic was annoying.

The gameplay gets very repetitive very quickly with walk into room, kill things, walk down corridor, kill things, walk into room, kill things etc etc outside of a single "1 v 1" level which was annoying but fun, the levelling up system is OK, the scavenger hunt for loot is a little out of place but OK I suppose, and the story is utterly laughable as a fan of the Lore.

What they did get very right is the visuals of the various worlds, USCM Grunts & Aliens plus the sound design, both of which are amazing for a fan, with loads of little bits deliberately thrown in for fan service (and likely missed by normies).

This somewhat went under the radar for me but got it last night and its really tense. I go round each corner thinking something is gonna pop out at me. Prefer the top down view just so i can see whats coming or get a better view of the layout incase i get ambushed.

Got to the 2nd mission last night and maybe half way through so still learning.

First mission absolutely drew me in.

Edit: Getting a weird FPS cap though where it won't go higher than 130fps on unlimited setting, tried a few fixes recommended by various communities but none of them seem to work. If i set it to my monitors refresh rate 165hz, it will go back to the default 130fps on unlimited. Very weird.

I really enjoyed this, thought it captured the atmosphere and ambience of Aliens really well, thought I heard something recently about a DLC or expansion or something for it?

Started this game up last week... loving it!

Many of the launch bugs seem to have been solved, which is great (and why my "wait 6 months before playing new games" policy is in place :p).

I'm only on chapter 3, but they have really nailed the atmosphere, design, sounds, and Alien tropes. I've read there is a:
game clock that starts about half way through that creates a lot more urgency in how you play

But for now I'm taking my time to experiment and fully explore all the levels.

One random thing I found is that certain textures seem sharper with AMD FSR on (playing on a 6900XT), and it gives a pretty big bump on the frame rate as well...

I can’t wait to get started but I’m stuck on Brotato at the moment. I need to start Aliens before the clocks go back whilst it’s still dark at night. They mostly come at night… mostly.

Finally finished this last night, awesome game! On New Game+ but i've started Balders Gate 3 now so that will have to wait until after.
