Ok I have seen a lot of negativity around the interweb for this film and after seeing it for the second time (except now on Blu-Ra) I stand by my prior assessmrent that this is in general a decent film, and a good one for any Aliens vs Predator fan.

Fair enough there are a few fluff niggles, like the speed which the Aliens gestate being hyper-quick compared to previous canon movies, but the following holds true:

  • The acting is actually pretty decent and convincing for the most part
  • The Predator is possibly the best represented of any film i've seen yet, and the aliens were for the most part spot on
  • The sound effects are great from all alien/predator perspectives
  • It has some great and memorable sequences like the hospital flatline scene
  • You actually get a feeling that a small town is being absolutel ****ed by an infestation of the deadliest creatures in the universe
Seriously, the acting wasn't bad... it was at worst average and it didn't turn into some cheesy teen flick, it just gave enough background on the main characters to give you some empathy and then left it at that until people started dying. I personally think that this film paves the way for an EPIC sequel that can follow the canon fiction books into turning Earth into a complete battleground... whether it be another installment of in the Alien saga, or a big budget follow up to this film. The involvement of Yutani at the end opens up a mahoosive potential for a tie-in and even further expansion of the series.

I really got the sense that something heavy was beginning when the aliens started to rip through the neighbourhood... the scale was actually perfect for the beginning of an infestation, and I loved that way that in this film no-one was spared, whoever the aliens came into contact and managed to get hold of, died, just like they theoretically would if the fluff held true. Te nuking of the town was also a great touch and conveyed a sense that the military know that if "whatever it is" is allowed to spread and is not contained, then the world is in some serious, serious trouble.

I may be in the minority but I genuinely think this film holds up in its' own right, and is milens ahead of the first in just about every respect.

Thoughts?

Definately not of Predator or Aliens quality... but I guess my post was just defending it as a decent film in its own right rather than comparing the quality directly to the originals, which it could never hope to match.

I enjoyed it too, as you've said it shouldn't by any means be compared to the pred or alien films though. I went into it expecting the worst and by doing that i guess i was comparing it to the original (and imo utterly terrible) alien vs pred film. Because of that i was pleasantly surprised, the pred was suitably badass (unlike the wusses in the last film) and the gore was far more suitable. It also did a far better job of portraying the fact that humans would be utterly useless against these two species, i hated the fact that in the original some scientist chick was able to kill more aliens than two of the actual predators were able to.

Have to say, I also enjoyed Requiem, as you said, a few niggles re gestation and such, but overall a good and enjoyable movie that could (if done right) spawn further movies to tie in to the AvP universe. I would love to see a film based on earth being overrun by alien's.
On the hole, it had a good mixture of alien/predator and the added human victims so made for a decent horror/scfi flick.

I thought it was as gash as I was expecting. It brought nothing new to the table and followed the same tired story that most modern teen horror movies follow where characters get killed off one by one and are essentially idiots. There was little emotional attachment to the characters and it didn't feel like an aliens/predator movie. If they removed the few links that existed between this film and the rest of the franchise it could easily have been a standalone film about an entirely different alien species.

And it would still have been formulaic crap.

I liked it, it wasn't epic or anything and not the atmosphere of the originals but it was enjoyable.

Enjoyed it, but thought a hell of a lot of the scenes were far too dark and fast to be able to tell what was going on.
I remember thinking this at the cinema, then watching it on tv. My mrs even said it without me putting the idea in here head.
Anyone else think the same?

I agree, but sadly it seems to be a trait of most action films these days so i don't even bother complaining about it when talking about a film. Even Star Trek did it too much for my likings, the only action film i can think of in recent memory that didn't was Taken, but sadly that suffered from far greater problems.

I liked the film, but no where near as good as it should be.

AvP is a huge market (game wise anyway) and it really needs to be taken more seriously.

At the risk of taking the thread off course what problems are you thinking of? For the most part it seemed a pretty decent film to me albeit with some minor niggles.

AvP2 Requiem just isn't that good as far as I'm concerned, I bought it as I wanted to see it but I can't see myself bothering to watch it again any time soon. It's not as bad as AvP but it's a pretty substandard film overall.

I realize now that my 'far greater problems' make it seem like i disliked the film, which i didn't. What i meant was that it had problems with certain aspects of the film that i find affected its quality more than shakey cam would have. For example the plot just didn't tie in with me, she goes to Paris and happens to be abducted within hours like her dad said she would, when there's no connection other than basically she's a hot teenager?

What i meant to get across was the fact that, it was a good film with good camera work, whereas for example star trek was imo a great film with sometimes lacking camera work. As a whole Star Trek worked out better for me as shakey cam isn't a massive issue in my eyes, just a bit of a niggle.
