Did anyone see this on the news this morning? I personally think they are bound to be out there but, scoping out are planet? I'm not so sure...

'Secret files on UFO sightings have been made available for the first time by the Ministry of Defence.' - BBC News

Quite interesting I think. /Discuss

EDIT: Some link to the files (I don't know if its all of them) http://ufos.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

I think there are aliens out there somewhere, but I don't think we're likely to encounter them. Even if we do, we might not even recognise them as life.
I like this quote tho:

'Sometimes I think we're alone. Sometimes I think we're not. Either way, the thought is staggering.'

Other forms of life must exist. It would be extremely arrogant of us to presume we were the only ones in the entire universe.

So since 'alien' life is generally taken to mean any extra-terrestrial life, then yes. I am sure they exist.

Shame they're only releasing 200 files over the next 4 years, thats not very many and I doubt it will include any of the really juicy ones...

Think they exist don't think they've been here nor will we see/meet them within our lifetime (or quite a few).

The universe appears to be pretty big and if you look at the Drake Equation there is a good chance that there is life out there.

Will we have any form of contact it in my life time ... I doubt it unless we make some form of enormous breakthrough in propulsion and other technologies which allow us to actually explore outside our local area, (after all why would they want to come here).

I'm absolutely certain alien (as in not of Earth origin) life exists. It's intelligent alien life that's the problem. Theories have suggested anything from a near certainty to more chance of winning the Lotto (often just by applying different possibilities to the Drake equation). I'll be the optimistic type and go for the 'more likely' end of that range. :)

I did accuse the g/f of being an alien this morning, she wasn't all that impressed... :( Do you think they would be humaniod in structure tho?

Earth orbits the Sun which is our star. Taking into account that there is an estimated 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars according to NASA it is very nieve to think that that is not another planet orbiting one of those stars that supports life. Also why does "life" have to be carbon based?

Have we been visited, I don't know but if "they" have the technology required to do so it is light years (excuse the pun) ahead of anything we know about never mind we are developing. So would we even know if we had been visited?

Depends what kinds of worlds they live on. If you believe in evolution then the humanoid form does seem to be the most 'successful' for building things. But then even if they weren't humanoid but were intelligent they could build technologies to suit them. I think the cliched Star Trek quote about 'life but not as we know it' could be quite apt.

Europa which is close to home is thought to have a great sea of water underneath its frozen surface. Can't wait until they send a probe to Europa.

I thought Titan was pretty close to sustaining life too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titan_(moon)

Titan or Saturn VI is the largest moon of Saturn, the only moon known to have a dense atmosphere, and the only object other than Earth for which clear evidence of stable bodies of surface liquid has been found.

Good thought, got me thinking. I would assume insectoid like ants would be quite efficient however like you state it depends on what type of would they like on

"Another document reveals the experiences of a 78-year-old man who alleged that he met an alien beside Basingstoke Canal in Aldershot, Hampshire in 1983.

He said he went on board the craft, giving a detailed explanation of it, before being quizzed by the aliens about his age.

He was then told: "You can go. You are too old and too infirm for our purpose."

A further document reveals how, on 21 February 1982, a group of customers and staff at a Tunbridge Wells pub reported an unknown object with green and red flashing lights - seen heading in the direction of Gatwick airport.

Wonder what that was?

I'm a statistical kind of guy, so I believe there is other life in the universe. That being said, for aliens to visit Earth requires intelligent life that has achieved space travel, and that can travel great distances. It's possible that another alien species is natrually more suited to space flight, biologically and pshycologically, but with our current understanding of physics the maximum speed of a space faring craft is very slow relative to the size of the universe.

Also, assuming that an intelligent alien species has advanced to a point where they can attain speeds that are a significant percentage of the speed of light, they would have to find us. The only way they may find us would be similar to our search for Earth-like planets. But this presumes that the alien species lives in an Earth-like environment. So my guess is that if/when we do encounter alien life it will biologically similar to us, as they would have sought out a planet similar to their own.

But the big leveller in the equation for me is time. Given enough time any minutely probable event will occur (probably :)), so it's possible that alien life has visited Earth if they evolved far earlier than we did. If this is the case then you would have to say that they evolved on a planet far nearer the centre of our universe where planets formed first.

I've recently been on a UFO info seeking mission, and I must admit I was surprised at what I found.

Anyone seen the Disclosure Project? Thats some freaky ****

I think something is going on and I doubt we will find out from the government. I would love to be put straight over this and find out the truth. There are just too many reports of amazing UFO sightings and all of them cant be false.

There are also a lo of Elvis sightings...

Also why exactly would aliens not want to say hello? but instead continue to abduct alcoholics and the mentally infirm (Americans)?

I always find it amusing how people jump from 'UFO' to 'aliens' as if it's the only explaination for an unusual object being seen in the sky.

I've no doubt that there are many 'UFO' sightings and I'm fairly sure that there is extra-terrestrial life somewhere else in the universe, maybe even intelligent life.

But is our planet being visited by little green men in flying saucers? I seriously doubt it.
