Hi all,

I have an Alienware m17x. Its a powerful machine scoring just short of 12,000 on Geekbench. It has SSD.

I am considering replacing it with the Macbook Pro with Retina display 15" which scores a similar Geekbench score.

The Alienware is stronger on graphics but Macbook on processing power and memory as it has a higher clock speed on both.

Should I change? If so why and if not why not?

I hope you guys can help in my uncertainty. What are the pros/cons?

Email.
Monitor our website stats. This is a big plus to the retina display, as I react to user behavior seeing graphs clearer).
Internet.
Watch HD films.
Work stuff (generalising office documents, website changes basic applications).
Adwords stats.

I don't carry my Alienware around, I guess because its big and heavy. This may change with a Macbook which may also be an advantage.

Well the question is, why do you want to change? What do you use the laptop for? do you have the latest r4 m17x? Since you have an alienware, you must game then?

By all means, if you want a mac because you fancy a change, but are looking to find a good enough reason to swap, then get a mac. But just because something has a bigger benchtest score, doesn't mean you'll notice it.

Kobi - thank you for your post, and apologies if i was unclear on my last post.

Both laptops perform roughly the same overall, however the Alienware performs better from a GPU perspective and the Mac on the CPU and RAM. Really there is nothing in it so the bench score really isn't a deciding factor?

I have the M17x r3.

I am considering the dimensions of the Macbook as well the high resolution screen. But what can this Macbook offer which my Alienware doesn't and vice versa?

Ah sorry, i didnt even know you sent a reply haha. i went and put the kettle on half way through typing my reply.

Right well the major pros and cons for each is...

Mac pros: high res screen, slightly faster using some programs, but i dont think you'd notice much with the ones you use.

Cons: software restrictions including games.

AW pros: No software restrictions, games, your r3 will have a 1080p screen? enough for watching movies.

cons: not very portable, slightly slower(again depending on the programs) and already dated.

have you used a mac before? big risk if you find you find you dont like the OS. But the mbp is a very beautiful machine.

I have both and trust me, the macbook pro is way easier to carry around.

On the other hand my alienware is the bad boy of the two and crushes games :)

I agree I have an Alienware M18x and RMBPR, I use the Alienware for gaming only, whereas the RMBPR is used for pretty much everything else including commuting.
