Alienware M18x SLI not working

My experience with Dell is if it's in warranty and you are trying to get them to sort something out and they won't, then throw legislation at them, that moves them :)

Did it with my Dad's laptop years ago when it wasn't working right, as soon as I type Sale Of Goods Act into an e-mail withion 3 hours I had a supervisor calling me to say they were arranging for a brand new replacement to be delivered.

Here are some details from the Dell Outlet Q&A FAQ:

All Dell Outlet systems are sold with the same standard limited warranties as we do on our new systems Please see out Terms and Conditions for details.

We are happy to offer Dell Online Outlet customers the same high-quality customer support that comes with new Dell systems.

Dell Outlet sells refurbished computer equipment which has been returned to Dell for a variety of reasons. Occasionally products purchased will come with superficial marks such as minor scratches which do not affect performance, functionality, the quality of the product or its overall fitness for use. Also, on occasion, parts/components may be used for repair which may vary, in terms of colour only, from product purchased. Purchases are made subject to these conditions but other statutory rights are not affected.

All they need to do is replace the motherboard surely?

Well after doing some complaining on Twitter last night I have just had a call from customer services to say that tech support will be ringing me to discuss the spec of a replacement laptop :D

It will be interesting to see what they come up with. Since they don't offer the dual GT460M any more, would a single GT560M be the equivalent?

You don't want a M18x with a single card. :)
The 560M is only slightly faster than the 460M. Hopefully they'll offer dual 560M's, or if you're lucky something better.

Good luck.

Yeah, I just looked at notebookcheck and the 560M is about 15% faster than the 460M, but 460M SLI is 15% faster than a single 560M.

Just noticed a strange thing on the Dell online configurator - if you go for 2x750GB drives they charge £30 more to have them in RAID 0 than if you have them in RAID 1.

Also on the M17x the GT580M is now cheaper than the Radeon 6990, but on the M18x it is more!:confused:

Some of Dells pricing has always been silly, but that sounds like it's getting dafter. The 580M is faster and has better driver supprt, should never cost less than the 6990 (and I've got 6990s in mine).

I got an email the other day with the spec they're offering, which is the base model M18x with i7-2670QM, 6GB RAM, 750GB HDD and a single 560M. I replied saying that my current one has dual gfx cards and dual hard disks and if they could kindly update the spec with those it would be great :)

Not sure if they will go for that since it already has an RRP of £1759 but it's worth a shot!

Yes, I tried my best but they wouldn't budge on the spec. They said it was either that or a refund so I agreed. It is a brand new one after all so it's still worth a lot more than I paid.

The replacement has finally arrived!

Very nice packaging. I might have to pinch the mouse mat before putting it on ebay ;)

Thanks for the help and advice everyone! :)
