So I'm pricing up a new gaming laptop and came across these Clevo builds from OC.

Spec'd the following system with OC and Alienware:

English Windows® 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)
3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3630QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.4GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)
2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 680M
8192MB (2x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
500GB 7,200rpm SATA 3Gb/s HDD
17.3" WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD

OCs Destroyer P170: £1647
Alienware 17x r4: £1738 (before discount codes/cashback)

I would have thought the Clevo would offer a bigger saving than this?

Are you sure that Alienware price is correct for a 680M? I've been looking lately and it cost a bit more? Maybe prices have dropped in the last few days? I'm going to have another look :)

Alienware, no competition...

I own a m17x r4 with a 680m in it and its monster of a laptop. I was close to buying a OCuk laptop but it just isnt in the same league in build quality and performance. Its worth the wait to get one.

I have a M17x r4 with a 7970m, many on here will say get the clevo etc.. but the alienware provided you get it without day one issues, but then they'll fix it if you do will net you one of the quickest gaming laptops you'll ever see.

i'd google clevo and keyboard issues, heat issues and general issues regarding sound - or lack of it, and you'll soon see that the wait for a Alienware is worth it..

but Dell customer service sucks.. Which is a shame, as the laptops are fairly robust and work, and work well.

Alienware easily
Why? Sound card is not trash, Keyboard is not (unless you buy from XMG) a US layout + UK buttons, heating on the alienware is brilliant, build quality on the alienware is outstanding

Yes the customer service sucks but when you get to someone with a brain you will be very happy

Get your self on notebookreview forums there a lot of knowledgable guys there who will be happy to help. Even alienware reps on there.

As a complete package the Alienware is far better!!!

Thanks for the replys. I'm sure Alienware is better, but that's my point, I would have thought the Clevo, being fairly inferior, would cost a fair amount less than the same Alienware package. But it appears not.

On another note, with the Alienware packages, the Nvidia 680m (£430 extra) appears to be better than the AMD 7970m (£160 extra), but does the performance increase justify that major price difference?

If youre going to buy the Alienware, google 'Saving £££ in the UK buying alienware' could save you a good amount, or look for discounts!

As for 680M v 7970M, I do not think the cost is justified

I've owned about 5 laptops in the past 7/8 years, samsung, dell, MSI, and now the alienware(although strictly speaking it's dell I think but ya know what I mean...)...the alienware is by far the best I've owned in terms of build quality, which is followed closely behind Asus (in my own experience).

Get the alienware :p

I've owned two Dell's, an Samsung and now my Alienware.

The Dell D600 and Dell Studio 1749 were solid workhorse laptops, they worked and did what they were meant to do with little to no hassle.

The Samsung however I felt the build was slightly flimsy but the performance was good for the price I paid for it, but soon had that feeling of wanting a solid built laptop like the Dell..

alienware was the only one to offer the same performance or better then the samsung I wanted to replace.

The 7970m has been a stunning performer. It has played every single game i've thrown at it at utlra with good levels of AA, with only crysis 3 and now Tomb Raider and the newer TressFX really making me knock a few settings down...

The build quality to me is excellent, but there has been reports that some Alienware's have failed, but they generally fail within the first few months from what I've seen and even had myself.

My Alienware took ages to get built and delivered, it went wrong (died totally blew all the major components) within a few hours. Dell after a number of calls finally sent an engineer and he replaced every single part minus the case, keyboard and screen to get it working again, then had a new one built and sent to me within 14 days.

The replacement was 100% flawless, its been used heavily since I got it, and has never overheated, crashed unless it was my own fault, ran amazingly well and provided me hours of enjoyment, to me it was worth every single penny I paid for it.

Sadly Alienware are mocked a little, the Laptops are fantastic but I'd be happy to buy a laptop but wouldn't touch the desktops. I just think a laptop is something you can't really build yourself.

If you want a gaming laptop, the M17x r4 with a 7970m (the drivers for AMD are now a lot better) and with the 7970m (or a varient of it) hitting the PS4 then to me, it really is the hot must have portable gaming laptop for a serious gamer on the go..

I've just bought a 15.6" Clevo with a 7970M - hopefully being delivered on Saturday. I don't much care for the aggressive styling of the Alienware so went for the somewhat plainer Clevo. Was a bit apprehensive about getting the 7970M, but it appears AMD are getting themselves sorted out and the card offers great value for money compared to the 675MX or 680 (assuming it works...!!)

You won't be dissapointed. I went form a 5870M > 7970M, and WOW the difference is incredible!

Enjoy your new laptop!
