That Usmanov letter is damning!!

In so many words, he is blatantly accusing the Arsenal board of greed. They own shares in the club and the more money in the coffers, the greater their share value. Just looking out for themselves and he 100% correct imo.

This is the full text. It's very rare you see such public slamming between shareholders.

Dear Sirs,
In recent weeks a couple of separate actions have occurred, which have caused us, as a near 30% shareholder in the Club, to have serious concerns about the approach of the Board and the management team:

• Firstly, there were some very deliberate and public comments by Ivan Gazidis which were intended to leave the Club's supporters with an impression that Red & White is in some bitter stand-off with the Board over its desire for a Board seat and that our involvement on the Club's Board might cause conflict and "destabilize" the Club; and

• Secondly, OJSC MegaFon (Russia) received a cold call letter from Mr Gazidis requesting a meeting to discuss a possible international partnership deal including shirt sponsorship. MegaFon is one of the three largest mobile phone companies in Russia and also happens to be over 50% owned by Alisher Usmanov. Is this really the level of professionalism that is being applied to securing long-term commercial contracts?

Let us not forget that we have invested circa £200 million of cash in the equity of the Club. We are part of this Club and naturally want the best for it, but our investment is less important than the fact that we are loyal supporters and will never do anything that would destabilize or "create conflict" at the Club.

We do however believe that you, the Board, and the executive management team should focus your energies on the most efficient operation of the Club and desist from seeking to create a false enemy in Red & White. In our view it is clear that you are trying to distract attention from the more fundamental issues facing the Club, and which indeed many of the supporters discuss through social media sites and other forums on a regular basis. These are the financial model, the lack of investment and the Club's future strategic direction.

However, before addressing these points, it is important to deal with the issues surrounding a Board seat for Red & White once and for all. As you all know well, Mr Usmanov has never sought for himself a Board seat at the Club. Indeed Mr Usmanov does not hold any board seat in any of the companies where he is an investor. Since the purchase of our first share in the Club, we have not only steadfastly adhered to a policy of non-interference in the running of the Club, but have consistently supported the management and given no reason whatsoever to be accused of subversion or sabotage. The history of our voting in support of the Board at the annual general meetings is proof of this.

Indeed, in any conversation about conflict, it is clear from a look at the history of the Club in recent years that the Board has achieved conflict without the help of any outside parties, notably the acrimonious departures of David Dein, Keith Edelman, Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith and Richard Carr, who then reappeared on the Football Club Board. You also instituted a lock-down agreement originally to prevent Mr Kroenke from gaining control and then, later, to exclude our involvement even though there were no grounds or need to do so.
The real conflict seems to be between the supporters' expectations and your vision for the Club and at the heart of this is the policy of so-called self-financing. The self-financing model was created to suit the major shareholders at the time, all of whom subsequently sold their shares.

The previous decision by the Board to fund the building of the Emirates Stadium with long-term debt was, we believe, certainly not about self-financing. If it had been, it would have been funded through a mixture of debt and non-dividend equity. Instead it allowed, in our view, the major shareholders of the time, who happened to all be Board directors, to load the Club with a liability, to benefit from increased future revenue streams and consequent increase in the value of their holdings, whilst avoiding dilution of their equity. The Board of the time then appeared to pursue a policy of increasing ticket prices and squeezing the fans to cover the short term cost increases which allowed them to bridge until all of these shareholders and Board directors sold 100% of their holdings and cashed out at vast profits.

This policy does not seem to have changed. We have sought and been refused any meetings with Mr Kroenke despite the fact that we own almost 30% of the Club or to put another way almost 1 in every 3 seats in the stadium. It is clear that our stated policy for the major shareholders, namely Mr Kroenke and ourselves, to inject non-dividend paying equity into the Club by way of a rights issue to reduce the debt and invest in the future is of no interest to the Board. Mr Kroenke was sold a vision by the Board at the time that the Club could be successful without further investment, so he is pursuing a similar policy which is to run the Club without any investment and to avoid any dilution of his equity, a good part of which was funded by a loan from Deutsche Bank AG to KSE, UK, Inc. at the time of the mandatory offer. The status of that loan and whether it is still outstanding has not been clarified by Mr Kroenke.

As a consequence of this policy, which is dressed up as prudent financial planning, it is down to our manager, and not the shareholders, to have to deal with the Club's tight finances, carry the burden of repaying the stadium debt by selling his best players and having to continue to find cheaper replacements. All of that, naturally, comes at the expense of performance on the pitch.
This policy is leading to the loss of our best players, often to our main competitors, and even causes the players themselves to question their future at the Club and the Club's ambitions. The situation with our captain and outstanding performer from last season Robin van Persie sums this up. Yet again we are faced with losing our true marquee player at the Club because we cannot assure him of the future direction and give confidence that we can win trophies. Where are the safeguards to ensure that this doesn't happen again and again in the future? As a top Club we should, at the very least, match if not beat the offers that other clubs make to try and lure our very best players away, and also provide a more compelling vision of the future. You can try and put a good face on a bad game for as long as you want, pontificating about the merits of this model, but it will not hide the obvious fact that it just does not allow our great manager to fully realize his managerial talent and deliver success for the fans who are paying the highest prices in the land. It appears that a place in the Champions League will be the pinnacle of our ambition again next season. Unfortunately, in the future we may see this ambition lowered further. It doesn't help to turn a blind eye to the reality of the situation and keep thinking of ourselves as being in the same league as Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester City and Barcelona. To have a fighting chance of success, which means winning trophies, we need to match them in every aspect, including, if not first and foremost, financial.

So what is Red & White's vision for the Club? It is simple. A debt free Club, with a big enough war chest to buy top talent players who can hit the ground running and who can complement the Club's long tradition of developing young players and homegrown talent. Together they can help the Club win the most prestigious trophies - because it is the trophies which are the crowning achievement for everybody at the Club. The trophies are also key to the commercial success of the Club - they increase the value of the players, the value of the brand, attract the best sponsors and maximize the value of our commercial contracts which should in turn mean that the Club does not have to squeeze any more income from hard pressed fans. We also believe in the transparency that a stock market listing brings so are committed to the Club remaining listed on the stock exchange and to greater fan involvement both through share ownership and also Board representation for the fans.

Today we wish the majority shareholder Mr Kroenke every success in running the Club, even though we have deep reservations about the viability of the policies being pursued by his management team and sanctioned by the Board.

Finally and reflecting our long-term commitment to the Club, we will continue to purchase more shares in the Club from anyone who wants to sell them to us. Also in order to formalize our long-term involvement with the Club and put an end to any speculation over our position, we, as the co-owners of Red &White, will proudly retain our holding in the Club as a long-term investment for ourselves and our family members to benefit for generations to come. We want the absolute best for the Club and will do what is necessary to ensure the success of the Club that we all love.
Yours sincerely,

Alisher Usmanov
Farhad Moshiri

Great letter. They need to be embarrassed into action or Arsenal will decline further.

stadium yes but squad? our squad from last season was weaker then spurs and liverpool if u was to compare like for like for each squad member.

Only thanks to redknapp and dalglish being **** managers compared to wenger was the reason why both clubs did nto finish above us. no one is envous of our squad

Arsenal always have loads of defenders injured, its been that way over the past 6 years.

Going into 12/13 there isn't any particularly positive sign Wilshire is coming back, he was "coming back" going into 11/12 as well, then the same 1/4 of the way through 11/12, then midway through 11/12, then the same towards the end of the season. Podolski from his Euro form isn't exactly looking top of his game, not even close, and very few people have really even seen Giroud play, let alone know he's any good, let alone know he can replace or play in the way RVP did.

Wenger's net spend isn't zero, Spurs were spending 30-40mil a year in transfers, we spent 30-40mil a year extra in wages, makes no smegging difference, we're spending the same money.

Usmanov's letter is irrelevant and stupid, its as simple as very very few people at Arsenal want a dodgy russian businessman involved at Arsenal.

The debt is paying itself off and AT NO STAGE has ever reduced our ability to spend. We are paying 120mil a year wages at this stage, if we were at Highbury that would be loading 50mil in debt onto the club every single year and Arsenal would have almost as much debt as Utd right now, without being able to afford the interest.

There wasn't and isn't any need to pay off the debt, nor was there any need to refuse to input money to reduce the amount of loans. He's conviniently forgetting that the board put up a huge amount of money to fund the building of the flats on the old stadium, which has itself paid off a huge amount of debt, that in itself was exactly what he's saying they should have done. It just wasn't directly in the stadium, it was in another product under the same Arsenal group, which has paid off a large portion of the debt as it was always intended to do.

The board members didn't pump up the price then leave on purpose, they were simply good business people who decided to increase the value of Arsenal football club by dramatically increasing the income via a new stadium. He thinks they ploughed millions into a new stadium and redeveloping the old stadium to make a few 10's of mils extra on their stock prices when they could have taken all the money Arsenal earned, (like the 100mil cash on hand we've had for years) and give it to themselves then sell their stocks whenever?

Kronke is a businessman who would never have bought the club for a ridiculous fee, the same shareholders could have found some rich guy from Dubai/Russia to vastly overspend on the club anyway, and they didn't.

The fundamental fact that Usmanov ignores is, Wenger is fully able to spend 50mil a year extra on wages over pre-stadium, and the club makes more profit AFTER debt, and the club is paying off the debt comfortably. If Wenger was spending that 50mil on a 50mil worthy better squad than we had in 2004, we'd be winning the league every other year. We currently have a squad no where near the quality we had in 2004, and we're paying almost double for it, that is the beginning and the end of the problem.

We will not win any significant trophy again under Wenger, we're struggling to win the freaking Emirates cup now ffs. We might win the carling cup because the vast majority of other top teams don't give a **** about it, winning 500k, by beating the best of the rest, with a 120mil squad..... even then Arsenal managed to screw it up and lose to a team getting relegated who were complete ****.

He is stirring bug style to take advantage of the RvP situation.

Personally I'm in the blame Wenger camp. Squad full of average, overpaid players and he wastes millions every year on **** rather than getting players who can have an impact. Giroud may prove us wrong but I expect him to be another flop on the continual Wenger conveyor belt of flops he buys. You can stay in the CL every year (probably) if you are happy with that but if you want to advance it will have to be without Wenger.

'Full of average players'... but he's managed to retain Champions League football for a long time...

How bad must Newcastle/Everton/Liverpool/Tottenham be? :p

very bad indeed. wenger is not the issue because if he was, he would be no better then harry rednkappp and dalglish yet wenger finished above those two with a weaker team.
i dont know what DM is smoking my constantly blaming wenger

If funds genuinely aren't being made available (as the letter alludes to) then how can Wenger be to blame. He didn't have a problem spending decent money a few years ago. The bottom line is we are selling all our best players, not replacing them suitably and banking the majority of money. Something in the club needs to change or we will find ourselves weaker every year.

As a united fan if you cant see your club is becoming a dortmund type of club you're going blind.
As it stands your just a base for a player to start you then sell them off when they hit peak because you cant keep them. One because you're not winning trophies and 2 because you can't keep the big names intrested causing a viscous circle!

The Ox is your biggest chance as i see it at the minute young, new and serious tallent, the only reason City / United got as many points as we did last year because of how badly managed squad were.

I really don't get the blame on wenger too this is all down to the board. Exactly as the above post says wenger needs a budget to spend to pull names in.

RVP is an amazing player as it stand at the minute but hes had 1 good season and suddenly hes the best player to grace Arsenal, i'd personally love to see him stay and continue his run.

exactly. how can u blame wenger for this?

This was clearly all planned and arranged along with the RvP statement. This Usmanov is just trying to destabilise the club for his own gain. He is not a fan and doesn't give a toss about the club. That said, I don't think the current owners are a lot better.

The situation we are in is no different to pretty much every other club baring a few because of the situation at Man City. We cannot compete on wages or transfer fee's and so what is happening seems logical. It's not just us. If someone had come in big time for Bale for example or well, I'm not sure who they could come in for at Liverpool tbh but I think fans are kidding themselves if they think their team could do anything else about it.

The reality is that any player with a year left on their contract is fair game and this Summer it's RvP's turn as he has been the most prolific striker. Another reality is that Arsenal cannot compete in the transfer market with these clubs and so we are only ever going to be able to buy the players who the likes of Man City don't want, hence the signing of Podolski and Giroud (both who will be a lot better than the Chamakhs and Park's we are currently lumbered with).

RvP was always going to go, surely it's not a surprise? As soon as we signed Podolski and Giroud we were never going to keep him as well. At 29 with still the chance of injury I say take the 20mil or whatever and good riddance.

One part of that letter which sticks out like a sore thumb is this paragraph here:

We are part of this Club and naturally want the best for it, but our investment is less important than the fact that we are loyal supporters and will never do anything that would destabilize or "create conflict" at the Club.

That is such a hypocritical statement, the letter was obviously meant to be made public otherwise it wouldn't have been leaked so easily, not to mention the timing of it, it's doing the exact thing which they are claiming they would never do. I don't know what Usmanov's angle is here but the only thing these public letters will encourage is fragmentation between the groups of supporters and possibly even have detrimental effects on the players. They have enough distractions without this idiot adding to them.

We've already spent over £20,000,000 in this transfer window, we clearly have money to spend and while we have tended to operate on a very stringent budget in regards to transfer fees, we are by no means a poor club, personally I think the way we do things is fine and I wouldn't want an owner who will just come in and ***** money left, right and centre. What happens if that owner were ever to leave? We'd be saddled with wages we can't afford to pay, we wouldn't be able to attract decent players either, we'd be in a dark place.

As it is at the moment a lot of the people we have brought in over the past few seasons have mentioned Wenger as one of the key reasons for signing, not everything is about money and I do believe the club has an ambition and a commitment to try and win trophies. We've fell short the past 5 or 6 years but during that time we've almost won the league and we reached a cup final, we have been competing for trophies so I don't really know what Usmanov and co are talking about.

The man has no class and no thought for the players or fans, it's not right to air your dirty laundry in public like this, players releasing statements is one thing, but you'd expect better from someone who apparently loves the club and apparently only wants the best. Does he think that writing such a damning letter and making it public is in the best interests of the club? The guy is a moron.

Mertersacker
Park
Santos
Chamakh

There are probably loads more over the last few seasons. Im not saying you have loads of cash but what you have Wenger manages to waste the majority. I have no ill will toward Arsenal, I like the football you generally play, but to have money and waste it on dross is doing you no favours and it's the manager who spends this money every year.

If you had invested the money wisely every year on one or two good players at key times you would be better off, much better off, than where you are now.

Mertesacker is better than people give him credit for in my opinion, he's still young for a defender and has a load of caps for Germany, which if he was a terrible defender probably wouldn't be the case.

Park has played a handful of games if that, you could say it's the managers fault for not properly rotating but RVP played virtually every game and Park didn't get a look in. Maybe he is **** in training, who knows?

Chamakh is alright, nothing special but again every striker played second fiddle to RVP with there being virtually no rotation up front at all, I don't count the last 5 minutes in a game already won/lost as rotation.

Santos is pretty **** defensively I'll admit, but I like him going forward and he'd be better as a winger, I'm not disputing the fact that Wenger has signed his fair share of duds, but not every player is as bad as the Arsenal fans on here make out. This must be the worst place for pessimistic Arsenal fans on the Internet. :p

Think most of us lot are pessimists, I know i am :p

My mates are already sick of me writing off Newcastle for next year because we have made no signings. Though, off topic, Ba has apparently said he will definitely stay this summer but Simpson is going to reading. Knew Simpson was a merc.
