hey guys, i could use a few tips if you've got any.

I've been learnin guitar for the past 2 years or so on both acoustic and electric, but just recently i've noticed i cannot play standing up to save my life. i've always been sittin when playin just because it felt more comfortable and probs cos i was being lazy but im now finding i want to be standing etc.

chords i usually do with ease sitting just turn into mush with lots of buzzing when im standing lol. i've been reading on the net that having your guitar higher (strap a bit smaller than normal) should help but i just cant quite seem to bend my fingers round to the frets enough for some chords (also doesnt feel very comfortable on my shoulder the higher i have it)?? i've been practicing like this but for things like E and bar chords etc i just cant get my fingers flat enough on the frets??

can anyone help me out here? maybe suggest somethin to try etc??

cheers :)

I just kept adjusting the guitar until i felt comfotable with it (as comfortable as i could get).

Then practice at the most comfortable point, you'll pick it up ;)

When I was in a group I was the only one that just stood there playing when everyone else bounced around :o

Stand up and keep playing stuff you enjoy and you'll get over it soon enough :)

its not that im embarrassed (right word for situation??) bout standin and playin, its just that i can't play very well standin lol. im finiding it really difficult to play chords etc

Try really shortening the strap so you look like you're in Status Quo, and get used to that. Shouldn't take too long.

From there just extend it bit by bit, you'll get it :)

The vast majority of guitarists you see with the guitar dangling around their needs are talentless nu-metallers playing 1 finger with drop D tuning anyway lol.

It's practically impossible to shred (if you are into that kind of thing) or even play solo's with the guitar that low.

As people say, the best way to get used to playing standing up is to just practice. I find it easier to adjust to playing standing up if, when I practice whilst sitting, that I put the guitar on my left knee.

Yeh i have to have my guitar basically over my stomach/chest...

how people play the guitar scraping off the floor beats me.

bit of a tom morello look tbh :p, but i feel comfortable.

however i didnt find it difficult to go from sitting to standing, maybe you need to find the perfect length on the strap :p

p.s. not on floor

Now either you're joking and that has gone over my head or you've never seen Status Quo.
Quo were probably the first rock band to sling their guitars low, if you go any lower your arms won't reach.

Sounds like you need your guitar Petrucci-high

That's what I was thinking. He must be joking, surely?

I have my guitar just above the belt. used to be all about the low slung but whatever people say, it is easier with the guitar higher.

having said that it just depends how you started playing and what you're used to. i'd start with the middle of the back of the guitar where your belt buckle would be.

PS

make sure, if there is a belt buckle, you t shirt goes over it, or it will scratch the guitar to ****, common sence i know, but i ahve seen too many guitars ruined this way to not mention it :) .

They weren't the 'cleanest' of players either, which is what the OP sounds concerned about.

As much as you should be hung for that statement, its true.
Take any live recording of both artists and see how many duff notes they play.

yeah i am lookin to play with a bit more accuracy, at the moment i think ive found my 'sweet spot' around belt height as you say seems to work for me, guess its just down to more practice now
