Hi guys,

does anyone know if i can get an all in one dvd system which has a hdmi out, prog scan and some nice surround sound? Saw a phillips HTS3115 but apparently this has reliability problems.

Thanks in advance

thanks for the reply. That system would be way over my budget. The phillips one i saw was £170! anything around that mark would be good. Don't want to fork out too much.

cheers

A decent dvd player with hdmi out will cost £170 alone. :p

A decent speaker system will cost £200, and thats not even with an amplifier.

You need at least £350, £500 if you want an amp.

As they say jack of all trades, master of none.

A good quality scaling DVD-player (1080p) with HDMI is about £180. 5.1 speakers only, about £800-£1000. £350 for av amplifier.

So all of that for £170 is asking a bit much, unless you're not bothered with sound, build quality or upgradability/connectivity.

Have a look at the Panasonic SCHT855. I bought it for £240 last year.

£800 for speakers is way over the top, he wants a cheap home entertainment system not a cinema setup.

No it isn't. Budget in a complete 6 speakers, and £800 is budget range. Oh and don't forget amp, speaker cable, interconnects and video cable.

However if it was a £800 for a 2ch, then that would be "over the top" for a basic budget system.

I think people expect miracles out of something so cheap, what next, a 8.2 system for a tenner?

I think you are being elitist there mate.

Not everyone needs expensive speakers and as has already been said, your minimum £800kit will be top range for most.

Obviously it will crap going by your definition but I doubt he'll care.

PIONEER DCS353 for £269 - or you could prob stretch to a basic separates system for c £330 (with not great speakers)

Add £140 if you had KEF 1005's,and then from £350 upwards for good speakers packages

All av stuff suffers from price snobbery unfortunately, but the differnence between the speakers on your tv and a cheap and cheerful pioneer/sony type all in one is huge.

I don't think anyone would consider that budget for this purpose, you don't need to spend £800 to get something that sounds good, you always seem to reccomend systems that are way above what people require.

£800 would be above my wildest dreams. I Only require something with a little bit more definition. A simple all in one system. Apart from the phillips and the aforementioned panasonic are there anymore?

thanks

Squiffy, while you do know your stuff, can you PLEASE stop saying to people, not enough, spend 2k... when the budget is £150.

Give advice, not useless info.

Fair enough, it wont buy you a good system, but it will buy A system, and if he is happy with it, who are you to say its not "good". Its all subjective.

As i said before, if he just watches the odd dvd, and wants sound from behind him, a philips £120 speaker set, and a £60 upscaling tosh DVD player will do the job he requires.

Your methodology is the same as someone asking for a cheap pc to run MS word, and speccing them SLI setups and SCSI hard drives...

If he's bothered enough to need seperates, he KNOWS he wants seperates, not an all in one setup. If this thread was "I have a £1500 budget, recommend me some gear", your advice applies, but not here im afraid :(

Some people dont want, need or can't afford the best gear, and are happy to settle for a cheap system from the high street. I think it will be single percents of people who spend thousands on hi-fi gear tbh, as most people simply don't get enough use to warrant the massive expenditure.

completely agree. You mentioned the tosh upscaler and some seperate speakers-can i use the tosh as an amp? or will i have to get an amp with it? to be honest one of the reasons i wanted an all in one was to minimize the number of boxes around the house! Please advise...

To the untrained ear, you don't need a £800+ setup to be blown away.

I just got a £300 home cinema setup (Sony HTSF1000) and I am gobsmacked at how awesome it sounds.

Agree with above post, if someone is saying their budget is £200 or something, why bother telling them to spend £1k+ when really, something at £200 will probably be all they actually need. We aren't all complete audiophiles that can tell the difference between an £800 speaker setup and an £800.50 speaker setup

An amp is better but on your budget there isnt much point buying one, all in one systems will have speakers with inputs for the dvd player.

tobias - the toshiba upscaling dvd player is around £70, then youd need an amp and the speakers

id suggest NOT getting an amp and DVD player in one unit, as if one breaks, you have to replace both, and being honest, theres not going to be the reliability of seperates, plus you get better quality generally.

Philips, Sony, Panasonic etc do £120 ish kits with amp/sub in one, and the seperate sattelite speakers, Yamaha do a good one too from what i hear, though id assume theyre all about equal quality

Have a look over to www.avforums.co.uk and read around :) search all in one or a model no on the forum.

make sure the amp (whatever its built into) has enough inputs for your gear (games console, dvd player etc etc) :)

It's nothing of the sort, and completly different. If someone needs a word processor then speccing SLI is useless as they will never use the features and never notice the difference.

However if they have a £100,000 audio system they will always notice the sound quality difference. It's not like the high end speakers sound identical to the HTIB.

What annoys me is people ask "what is a good HTIB for £100" the answer is none. I think it's best listen to what they expect they're getting and listen to something a little bit better.

thanks for all advise so far. OK then so if i get a cheap amp and speakers set can someone recommend some for about £120 that have decent ports at the back. Ill need dvd player, tv maybe room for a 360 too.

cheers

ps sorry about my lack of knowledge
