Today's announcement of upgrades to Apple's Mac computer range not only brought updated specifications but also price cuts to customers in the US. Consumers in the UK, however, can expect to see prices rise in what can only been seen as a bold move in the current economic climate.

Apple announced that its 24-inch iMac is "priced more affordably than ever before" and will now retail at the same $1,499 price as the current 20-inch model whilst also featuring twice as much memory and storage as the previous generation machine. The 20-inch iMac will now be priced at $1,199 in the US, a price cut of $300. Meanwhile, over in the UK the 20-inch iMac that used to cost £782 now costs £949 according to Rory Cellan-Jones at the BBC News technology blog, meaning a price increase of £167. As well as this, a Mac Mini will now cost you £499 instead of £391 and a quad core Mac Pro will set you back £1899, increased from £1712.

The rationale behind these moves? The new models do have higher specifications than the previous generation, although prices have still been able to drop in the US. The main reason given by Apple appears to be the drop of the UK pound (GPB) against the US dollar (USD). They say that due to it falling 25% in the last six months, they are not able to pass on the price cuts that American customers are receiving. However, as noted by Cellan-Jones, "UK consumers will point out that Mac prices didn't fall when you could get $2 to the pound last summer."

The current economic downturn as already seen Mac sales slow as customers look away from the premium machines to cheaper computers such as netbooks. Whether these American price cuts can persuade more US consumers to buy Macs or whether the British price rises will detract UK buyers remains to be seen, but at a time when sales of computers around the world are expected to largely fall this can only be seen as a courageous act by Apple.

The apple lovers will still buy them all day long regardless of the price.

I would love a 24" imac but I think they are way over priced, the one I would want is £1499... madness to my eyes...

Interesting.

I ordered a Macbook Pro on Monday and received an email yesterday telling me the price had dropped.

The price has gone up, because the spec has gone up?

That's some sad logic.. and one that says they're due to go up year-on-year :(

Meh, I give it a month before everyone is spouting the 'You get what you pay for' rubbish. Just how much IS osx worth exactly? :S

£500 for an outdated mac mini......... when you add a mouse and keyboard you may aswell buy a laptop!

This is probably Apple's strategy. They've been trying to edge out the Mini for years but demand is too big. Minor updates at big prices after what has seemed like ages for a Mini update, is no surprise.

Few £k to me.

Software, file system, file formats.

I specced up the equiv i7 PC to the mac Pro and its £500 between the two.

That £500 compared to the £1000 of software i'd need to get from mac to windows is well worth it, even tho it really isn't in hardware terms.

Every retailer plays the psychological game. You just don't realise it..

They price the Mini there because they WANT you think "bah, it's only another £xxx more".

If they sell the Mini, they sell the Mini it's still a sale.. they are making you think you are saving money by going for an iMac, when in truth all you're doing is spending more money; which is what business is all about.

Spec up a top of the line iMac and it comes close to a low-end Mac Pro, that's the same kettle of fish.

It even boils down to offering multiple SKUs of the same model.. 9/10 times you will plump for the top one because it's that little extra, but it feels "worth it".

We realize you don't wanna pay for a new Mac, Jimlad. Doesn't really need a new thread. The £ is ****, new products, always gonna be higher than the US.

The Mini is over priced, but it has a proper gfx, rather than silly onboard, and its more configurable. Super Drive over Combo Drive, too which you could only get on the top model which was similar to the pricing of this one iirc.

I think they are too high, just makes me think about what to buy now.. Mac Mini or Macbook, lol! :p

Also it will never stop people buying :p

Everyone wants a Mac, and the starter is the Mini, when will make you want to get more for the iMac. Basically what EVH is saying.

the thread is about the price hikes not me wanting a mac, which i do have already... you can be a mac user and still think they rip you off you know?

yer they are expensive meh they are bootiful though..... :D

yeah they are, i hope i did not come across as a mac hater as that is not true, we push them for use in southampton schools. i just have an issue with the pricing and putting them up even more is even more bugging!
