Just built a new PC last week for my friend.

It's running an ATI HD 6870 but any newish game he's tried to play keeps crashing.

Tried Bad Company 2, Crysis 2, even something a little older like Medal of Honour Airbourne keeps crashing.

Viewing videos and general browsing/Windows tasks work fine.

Do you think the card is faulty? He's running the latest drivers, downloaded from the website today.

Sounds like it could be overheating. You can use something like MSI Afterburner to monitor temperatures and see if that's the issue.

Overheating could be an issue but also what make and model of power supply is in your friend's PC and what are the rest of the specs.?

You could start by telling him to ensure both 6 pin power connectors are securely attached to the card.

Got HWMonitor running, temperatures seem fine.

He's also got an 850W power supply in there. Both 6 pin adapters seem secure.

What make and model of 850W PSU?

It could be a faulty graphics card.

If you trawl back through the forum there seem to have been a few people who had problems with the OcUK HD 6870.

Not entirely sure. Think it may be bequiet...although when I check my order history on OCUK it just shows the name of the customised build I bought, not a breakdown of components.

Seen the various threads you mentioned. If I RMA'd it would OC send me a new HD 6870? Or could I swap it for a GTX 460 of the same price?

a BeQuiet PSU shouldn't cause any issues.

If the card is faulty then you should be able to get a refund.

You can buy whatever you like then.
