So i have a friend who had problems with her user account in vista which i tired to fix but it failed to get her user account back although she did get all her files back and backed up so it's all good.

Anyway all her start menu shortcuts to things like firefox, itunes...etc are missing although the programs are still there.

So is there an easy way to get them back or is it just a case of having to manually re-create the folder and shortcuts herself.

A system restore was tried and no luck there but will get her to make a new profile and see if that helps.

It's probably because the shortcuts and what not have been created for the administrator only when installation occured, not all users on of the machine.
Just go into the program files for each application and find the necessary .exe files for the applications and copy them to the desktop/ start menu or whatever.

Was the problem the user had virus related? There is one that changes the permissions on files and makes them archive/hidden. Check your Windows Explorer settings are set to show Hidden and System files and see if the files are in the All Users or User Account folder. You can also right-click the folder with the shortcuts and go to properties. Clear the check boxes for Hidden and Read Only.

**she's in ireland and i'm in scotland so all i was going by is what she told me she had done, what was there or not and anything that had happened when she booted up into windows before finding this problem.

Anyway what i was told is that she turned on her PC and none of her programs where there and she had said her files where missing from my music and other similar folders.

She then said she had the following message.
'your user profile was not loaded correctly! you have been logged on with a temporary. changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off. please see the event log for details or contact your administrator'

Via MSN on her laptop i walked her through copying her files to a safe location after i had helped her locate them and then trying to fix this issue and get her user account back if i could. Sadly i didn't get her user account back so she needed to create a new one.

That's when she informed me all her programs where gone although i got her to check program files to which everything that she had on her PC was present but just not in the start menu.

www.teamviewer.com

Get her to download the 'Join a session' thing

Download the full version yourself, then get her to give you the ID and password

You can then control her pc by typing them in to your full version

Awesome and free :)
