All these faulty Xbox 360s..Are they fake threads/posts etc?

I have been browsing loads of the gaming forums at the moment, and started to notice a trend with the xbox 360 threads about faulty consoles or, where completely random people have come into a thread off topic and posted about reliability woes. I have also noticed more recently this has happened with the PS3, where there seems to be a similar pattern of posts against it.

This has been spanning many key gaming forums, not OCUK and by looking at more detail over the last 6 months or so a lot of the posts are by newish users, and when user traced/posts etc all seem to have the same gist.

This sparked my curiosity since obviously online people tend to post the worst i.e. "I had 4 xboxes fail etc" but the sheer volume of threads and posts about faulty or dodgy consoles makes me wonder how many are actually real. After chatting in my local computer game shops about my potential PS3 pre-order the picture they paint of the 360 is pretty reliable. From personal experience everyone I know with a 360 has never had problems and the odds from online stats would indicate otherwise which is not the case.

Now I am not necessarily calling a conspiracy on this but it does seem pretty odd. I know there have been reliability problems and would love to chase down the true figures for console failures from all manufacturers.

So I guess my question is does anyone else think a high proportion of the “my console has died threads/posts (PS3 or 360) could be blatant fakes”?

It’s not hard to register on many of the key gaming forums these days and multiple accounts are easy to get.

What I don’t want this thread to become is a blatant console or manufacturer bashing thread, it is not what its meant to be but I am just curious to see if anyone else has noticed this. :)

Maybe most people don't see the need for starting an entirely new thread just to discuss how their 360/PS3 has packed in, and thus end up mentioning it in passing in another topic?

Seems more likely than lying to me.

EDIT: I also think you're over-exaggerating a vocal minority. It seems like loads of people have had their 360s fail because you never see those with fine and working ones posting about it. I remember a reliability poll a good few months back, which turned out those with faulty boxes were definitely in the minority. It just comes across that there are more because those are the posts you read.

I don't doubt there is a little bit of exaggerting in some posts when people say they've had 4 or 5 360's that have all packed in, and all their mate's 360's have packed in also. But, as Weebull said, no-one will post saying they've had a 360 for a month and it's still running fine, whereas if someone has a faulty console there is a good chance they'll post about it.

As it is, up until the other day, I personally didn't know anyone who had a faulty 360. Since then my cousin's console developed the dreaded 3 red segment ring fault, but that is still one in about 10-12 that I know of.

Im pretty certain people do exaggerate, and even make it up completely. Some do it simply to discredit MS and the 360 to persuade others not to buy one, but then they do lead sad existences. Couldnt care less about loyality, Ill let the hardware and software do the talking.

There is however without doubt, a huge problem with the reliability of the 360.

The question that springs to mind would be, why ?

Why would someone make it up ?

This is the great internet question though, why do people make up mundane things? like on this forum as an example, what car they test drive and own in motors forum (is Oracle still about :D ), or what girlfriend they they have in general discussion forum.

I was thinking it could be extreme fanboyists doing it as they do exist and on a lot of other forums their attiudes to each other plain suck, makes me glad to be on OcUK.

theres people here who claim to be on there 7th ps2 or 4th xbox 360 etc

i find it hard to believe tbh

i mean who in there right mind would buy another after the 2nd had broke anyway :p

i do personally know quite allot of people who've had faulty 360s but that was last year now .

anyone watch the watchdog program about the 360 :p

I missed that episode unfortunately. That Nicky bloke is pretty unrelenting isn't he, I'd hate to be the person being questioned.

I'm on my 3rd 360. If you dont believe it I can easily provide emails of my returns. I dont think i'm far off needing my fourth in 13 months either. Mine is starting to slip down the slope my other two did of a slow death.

Then I get the spare out the loft while MS de-fib my old one.

A couple of people in my group of mates playing the 360 have had a problem, but it was pretty quickly replaced or repaired, I dont see how anyone can go and break 4/5/6 of them, personally I would have to say they are either lying or just not very good at looking after equipment and expect it to withstand punishment.

Punishment? Mine sits totally ventilated in a very low dust room.I never even touch it other than to change discs. It doesn't get moved ever. I turn it on and off via the controller I eject and close via the controller. I've had two returns and am on my 3rd. The first red lighted the 2nd refused to play GOW.

The only punishment mines had is playing the damn box of chocolate.

Well since you aint broke 4 then my post did not apply to you did it :D

I don't think there can be any doubt that the 360 has a reliability problem. I'm on my third in 9 months, first one was DOA, second one died a few weeks ago and this new one is prone to a few lock ups. :(
I certainly don't mistreat my 360 either, I'm not one for punching things or chucking them about carelessly.

A friend has also had three 360's, his is now out of warranty and he's having to pay for repairs.

But then another mate has had one for a few months now, had it taken apart and put back together and it still works fine. Another two mates have just bought 360's, we'll see how long they last.....

My first one was fine but I sold it coz no games interested me last july. Got another one this xmas past and it's a bit dodgy on the drive front ie it's had some pauses and crashes during loading so I think it may have a problem. However out of the 5 guys at work with 360's one is on his original, another is on his sixth ("yeah sixth") and two other chaps are on there 3rd examples. From all I read there seems to be a real problem with the quality of solder maybe because of the recent RoHS compliance forced on all Euro region sales and this is hitting reliability badly. So no I don't think people are lying, there is a huge problem and it may be exagerated by MS sending poorly refurbed units back out as replacements.. I think it's when you get into the refurb loop that things can get bad.
