So if I want to get anywhere in this game, will I need to use the item shop? Or are there plenty of people actually "playing for free"?

No, you don't "need" anything from the shop. I strongly suspect it is being blown out of proportion. Only last night I was asking some members of Mercenaries guild (possibly the most 'successful' guild in Allods EU) if they have bought anything from the shop, and the only thing some of them have bought is a mount.

Pretty much. Past lvl 15 you get a stacking debuff each time you die. At max lvl it lasts 2 hours, unless you buy a pot with real money to get rid of it. No one going to wait 2 hours, so you are forced to spend real money.

I haven't been on it since the last big patch, as I just hadn't got run to letting it update yet. Was playing a necro and a mage, takes abit longer than I'd like to kill a mob (and they hurt like hell) but I always found the game good to chill out on.

What are you talking about? Drops of myrr can only be bought with in-game gold.
