Allowing anonymous WAN requests, is it safe?

I've been trying to fix a 100% packet loss. I've found that it can be done by allowing anonymous WAN requests through my dd-wrt router (fyi, it's a Dlink-DIR615). All well and good but before I allow anonymous ping's, I wanted to know "is it safe?"*. I've tried googling but didn't find much. Could someone please advise me?

If you're talking about allowing ping/echo/ICMP through the WAN from outside, it will make you more visible to scanners/skiddies, given that you previously had it locked down so it doesn't reply to port scans, etc....

It sounds odd though, that you need to allow pings through the WAN or else you have 100% packet loss!?
What sort of routing or fw tables do you have?

I think the 100% loss is due to the way the packet loss test I was using works. (This is going to make me feel like a right newbie but...) What do you mean by "What sort of routing or fw tables do you have?".
