So cut a long story short, I found myself stuck at the bottom of a road with no way backwards so I had to go down this road where the potholes were borderline dangerous, I kid you not if a bike hit one they would be thrown off.

Anyway despite my best efforts to avoid the biggest ones, it narrowed down to a single file bit, and I was forced to go over one which has scuffed the alloy

Whats the best option for fixing it?

Depending on the type of the alloy? If its painted, there's a lot of places that can rub it down, paint and clear coat.

If its machined, and painted parts, such as a VW Gti, then well you're sorta screwed ! There are people that can re-machine it, but its gonna cost nearly as much as a replacement.

Check with the local dealers on who they use on their used cars.

What car/age/value?

If it's just a single alloy - best bet is probably to get a mobile repairer to come and do it - someone like Revive (https://revive-uk.com/your-repair/alloy-wheels/), which I wouldn't have thought would be that expensive.

If it was more than 1 wheel (or the others could do with a refurb anyway), then I'd be looking for a local wheel refurb specialist.

If it's an older/lower value car and more than 1 wheel, then I'd be tempted to have a go at refurbing them all myself - e.g. using some good quality wheel paint like "Wurth Alloy Wheel Paint" that seems to be widely recommended.

mobile smart repair cheapest, 40 quid ish , I have used Revive as mentioned above, these folks just touch up the area and I have found that often you get peeling after a while and you may see damage when tyres are swapped that they couldn't get to

next is what I have had done today, wheel was removed, tyre deflated and pushed back, full respray of front face, spokes etc , cost was £55

best is a full tyre removal, strip of old paint and then a full respray or powder coat, expect around £100

£100 for that? I was £200 for a set of 4 18's last week  Full strip, powdercoat, remount tyres.

I've been quoted between £75 and £100 a wheel in the past. Seems about the going rate.

Yep I paid £220 for 4 x 17s on my skoda but that was a man in a van doing a sanding, painting (just to the edge/face of the rim, not all over) and bake in the back of the van. A proper all over powder coating job is more like 70-80. My local place (who are excellent, for anyone in the area) is £66 for a standard finish but you pay a bit more if you give them the wheel with the tyre, and a bit more again if you leave the car with them

I was quoted for 20s, often they charge more for big sizes

200 is very cheap for that though

Ha ha. I was disappointed. When I had my MV3's done by them a couple years ago, and that included fixing a flat spot, they only charged me £150.

Was still happy enough to pay £200 though. I needed the tyres changed from winters to summers anyway, so that would have been £40-50.
