Im in the middle (well, beginning) of refurbing my alloys

They are not kurbed at all, just the paint is starting to bubble and the lacquer is peeling off (not there in some places)

Wheels

I can sand the face of them no problems, but getting into the small bits is proving difficult.

I have (my housemates) dremel and got a 'steel-carbon' bit for it, but it was gone in < 30mins

What i need to know is if there is a better attachment or another method (strong paint strippers?) of getting the paint off and stripping the alloys down

I've just finished spraying and laquering my first wheel about 10 minutes ago!! :D

I just used varying grades of wet and dry and did it by hand, my wheels arent as fiddly as yours look though.

Get all the loose bits off with a wire brushbit on a power drill then use the different grades of wet and dry (starting with coarse obviously). You only need to get the loose stuff off. I then cleaned the wheel with white spirit, then out come the spray cans.

Will go and get the camera for a piccy. Back soon.

Edit: Back again :)

Pictures dont do justice tbh, looks like I've just been and bought a new wheel

Take your time with the prep, good even layer of paint then plenty of laquer, just be careful as the laquer runs like a beggar if you get too cocky.

Fog

Ahem :o , sorry about pic sizes.....

As mentioned, Nitro Mors is meant to be the stuff to use. After mucho googling and research its the main product mentioned. I tried it on my old cars alloys, it did nothing to the outward face of the alloy, but it sure stripped the inners. I don't know if the outer face had some wierd lacquer on, it was a wierd crazing effect I was trying to remove.

/btw - got mine at Wilkos, much cheaper than B&Q ;)

Tbh if you can find someone to strip them and you do the rest, can't see it costing that much and will save you many hours of messing around :)

How many coats did you use?

I'm refurbing 3 sets of alloys, I read a thread suggesting 3 coats of primer, 3 coats of paint, 3 coats of laquer, what did you use?

that would sound good to me (repainted my front bumper - see pic in post #1 - and rear bumper) i would just keep going with the lacquer till it ran out... 5-6 coats

:edit: looking good Foghorn Leghorn :D

Didnt use any primer (didnt see the need as I didnt take them back to bare alloy). I used 120 grit to start to get the bigger scratches out, then 400, 800 and finished with 1200 grade wet and dry. Washed it all off then used white spirit on a rag to make sure there was no grease/residues left on the surfaces.
Spray wise I just used Simoniz 5 Wheel Silver, put on 3 coats to get it nice and even. Left it for appox 30 minutes then used Simoniz clear acrylic laquer. I've done 2 coats so far but will do another 2/3 again tomorrow. The paint isnt too bad but you do have to be careful with the laquer. Gives a fantastic deep shine though

Got all the bits from Halfords, £7.29 a tin.

Only another 4 more to do, ;)

Fog

wow. paint just bubbles right off! this is going to be an easy job

Brilliant Stuff

Not quite on topic but have you decided whether or not you're going to put the centre caps on those wheels yet?

(Love your car and it looks good without the caps :))

cheers :D

Im redoing the caps along with the wheels (and the locking screws) but im still undecided as to whether or not i will put the caps on. they make the inner part a bit too bland i think
