I noticed a bug in Synctoy the other day when comparing file numbers between my 2 sync drives (I have a backup for my backup :p).

I notice that not all files were syncing over and I established the fault down to Synctoy's error log - apparently it had flagged and unticked a whole bunch of files that were modified ages ago and it had not syncd them over so my backup was in fact bot being backed up! It would only sync those if I ran synctoy twice per session, you'd see it sync recent files but then a second run would sync up older files which it "missed"

I did some googling and found an alternative which looks much better and is also free AND it propagates file + folder deletions too as Synctoy would leave deleted folders on the sync drive (contents would be empty of course).

Allway Sync kicks butt :D

Hmmm...I'm going to perform a backup tomorrow to see if what you're saying happens to me.

By the way if it's sometimes missing files out, then are you using the right method for backing up? Silly question, but I had to read them all about three times before I understood which one I needed.

I used Echo in the sync profile so everything from M: echo'd to U: that had been modified, deleted or added.
The issue with synctoy is that if it has an error in doing a folder or file it will flag it to ignore next time round until you manually rerun the sync to sync up all file sin the error screen too - you don't know they are there until you look as well.

hmm this program looks like it would be good for synching my stuff from my main pc to my laptop and vice versa when i end up using my laptop for a while

thanks dude, great find!

my only gripe with synctoy (fairly big) is that it installs some files to My Documents, so if you do a mirror of my documents, it finds some files which synctoy needs, and looks dirty in the log

can this program be run from a usb stick? (without having to install it)

How about no thanks, they're both limited to what they can do and cannot match what has been posted in the OP.

And the other one looks so basic it doesn't inspire any confidence whatsoever in its feature set or lack of compared to Allway Sync.

I posted Karen's Replicator and SyncBack Freeware not because they are (or may be) better than Allway Sync (which has been in the Useful Freeware Utilities Thread for a considerable period of time), but simply to inform people that there are other (decent) free backup utilities around! ;)

After installation I copied the folder of the app to a remote location and ran the exe and it seemed to work fine!

It stores all sync database info at the destination location btw so I guess this is why it can be run from anywhere as it will search the destination for a sync log and database unlike synctoy where it saves the sync database on the source drive (which complicates the sync process as this folder is locked during sync so files do not copy!) - another area where allway sync excels.
