hey sanjay, quick question, but when you were sliding, did you once think about coming off the brakes or was you hoping that they would stop you?

Main thought was..ah crud, this could hurt!

Foot firmly on the brakes, hoping that ABS and the traction control would stop me safely (which i dont think it works on ice?).

Lost the rear wheels on my Clio today, luckily that icey patch didn't last long! Was only going 30 as well :o

No, in some cases you end up with little to no braking force, sometimes it's recommended you turn ABS off or pull the fuse and use cadence braking.

ABS is gay on ice and snow.

When it snowed in March (just after I'd got the car actually), I was driving gingerly down a 1 way street at around 20mph.

There was a T junction at the end. I started to slow down wayyyyyy before the junction and as I expected, the ABS kicked in but the car wasn't slowing.

I ended up overshooting the junction by about a metre.

In that position, there's absolutely nothing you can do apart from sitting there and hoping you get lucky.

Needless to say, if it snows this/next year, the ABS fuse is getting pulled.

At the bottom of the hill I live on, onto a main road ABS kicked in but I just manually cadence braked and I managed to stop fine.

Hmmm, I didn't think cadence braking would work, because as soon as you looked at the brake pedal, the ABS would kick in and you wouldn't actually be slowing down at all.

Will keep that in mind. I use to cadence brake in the 214 automatically. Guess I just got lazy in thinking that ABS'll save my ass :D

Well the ABS isn't all that agressive in my car I don't think, although I don't have anything to compare it to.

with your wheels locked you would never have been able to change direction, even if you had come off the ice. i know it is sorta contradictory to what instinct tells us, but in a situation like that coming off the brakes can help as it gives the car a chance to change direction.

glad you came out of it alright. just be uber careful when its cold out there, the roads seem so be so greasy lately too

I like driving the Mondeo in the winter, it's like trying to guide an eel up a greased bowling alley.
