Hey forum, long time no post! which i spose is good in terms of not having hardware problems! :D

anyway heres the long and short of it, i was using my computer to play music while i was on my xbox playing games, then i noticed from the corner of my eye the screen went black, i immediately tried pressing keys, managed to light up caps lock etc the pc was still running, so i shut the pc down and turned it back on.

now i cannot see anything the monitor just runs a "no video input" message constantly, so im left with a dilemma, i tried different vga cables and dvi adapters to the monitor, will try the monitor on another pc but i believe it is working properly, neither dvi port on the graphics card responded to the monitor although the computer was booting and reaching a state where i was able to press caps lock, so i guess its working

i opened up the graphics card and reapplied gpu heat paste, while doing this i smelt the card and i noticed it was strange in smell as if it had overheated, which was my first guess, also the fan makes a strange noise when i spin it, like its bearings are jamming against the fan, making it screech as it spins.

i tried different gpu power cables from the psu also, nothing seems to have worked, there are no other slots for gpu on my motherboard so i cannot test whether it is the slot.

the card was part of Order Number: OC609219
Order Date: 18 Aug, 08, 4:55 pm

obviously this means the item is just under a year and a half old, does this mean the warranty from ocuk is finished or is it a longer warranty ?
the cards exact naming in the order is
XFX GeForce 8800 GT Alpha Dog 1024MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (PV-T88P-ZHF4)

all your help is appreciated, i just want to get a replacement asap as i dont want to be confined to an xbox for weeks on end

Don't put your card in any oven that's used for cooking food ! It could make you seriously ill.

Get yourself a heat gun.

No, I'm a giraffe.

Of course I'm serious, it won't make you ill. I'm not suggesting sticking the card in with your Mcains Oven Fries and then eating them along with the fumes from the card.

However an 8800 will be RoHS compliant, and as such will contain nothing hazardous to your health.

A few people on the forums here have revived graphics cards that were otherwise dead, remove all plastic parts and pop it in the oven for a bit, this helps the solder to flow repairing dead contact points.

okay

given it a go at about 150 degrees in a fan oven, waited for it to cool and replaced, nothing zero zilch, should i try even hotter i guess, i also found a 2nd port for graphics card, nothing happened in that slot either :|

seems like everything that breaks nowadays is supposed to fix with a bit of overheating!

i may try 160 degrees when i get time.

*edit*

when i ovened it i didnt put the heatsink parts in, will this effect it or not, i didnt think it would as the heatsinks just a block of metal surely the components are what need heating.

The warranty hasn't ran out yet, and is with these guys.

***EXCLUSIVE Premium Priority 2 Year Warranty***

In the unlikely event of your card failing within 2 Years, OcUK will replace your card with a brand new one, pending testing within our standard RMA terms and conditions

Taken from these guys XFX product descriptions.

lol

explained thus far what has happened in the rma and was asked if it caught fire or had burned out, i was like nah didnt catch fire but think its burnt out, don't know when ill get a reply as its the weekend,

but when looked again today at my pc, with psu power into the graphics card, the gpu fan was not spinning at all, so either the motherboard/gpu mobo slot is broken or the graphics card has a blown capacitor and isnt sending the power to the fan,

i guess its the latter but i have no idea what would be correct  does this show completely that the card is broken, i have used the card in both graphics slots and the fan did not spin.

Rma has been started and im reading through the rules of rma's ive done one before but that was easy, i had all the original packaging

but i havent got the graphics card box to hand, i know my brother has the same card but he lives across the country and may not have the box still so what i need to know is what packaging i should wrap it in..

i am going to see my brother on sunday so if he still has his box ill take it off his hands (they are exactly the same model)
but if i can just package it in a box with some polystyrene (whatever they use to wrap motherboards) in then i may aswell go get myself some.

yea i was thinking i need to get myself an anti static bag, ive got an envolope bag thing with bubblewrap in that im gonna use for cushioning, living in a town like i do getting a bag like they usually come in will be a task, the closest i can get without using the internet would probably be a foodbag for cooking ingredients

*edit*
sent it away wrapped in a bubble envolope inside a tesco value iron box via royal mail special delivery, hope they like it :D
