I was wondering if anyone could recommend an alternative to the PS3 controller ?

I have a 360 and PS3 and love the 360 controller. I don't mind the PS3 controller for FPS, Platform games etc but I hate using it with racing games and therefore avoid buying racing games on the PS3. Now a few friends tend to use the PS3 more these days and with the release GT5 this year I want to be able to play the PS3 more also.

I just fired up GT5 Prologue for a test and the pad drives me mad, I find it very awkward using the trigger buttons and steering with the thumb stick, for some reason I tend to steer a little when breaking or moving back to accelerate, it frustrates me so much I had to turn off the PS3 mid game before I threw the pad through the TV screen. I used the D pad and buttons too for a while but that just didn't seem right....

So basically is there a good alternative to the PS3 pad, maybe one like the 360 pad ?

I have found there is an adaptor to use a wired 360 pad on the PS3, but I have also read that there is bad input lag with it. Does anyone have any info on this or indeed use a 360 pad on the PS3 ?

I know one answer will be to use a streering wheel, but at this time I don't have the room/setup for that :(

Anything made by Logitech is a good call.

But even then, the build quality often isn't as good as the official controllers, which is to be expected.

I use the XCM2 cross battle adapter to play PS3 games with a wired 360 pad, haven't experianced any lag at all with it.You can also use it to swap buttons and trigger functions which means you can use the triggers for aim, fire in fps games instead of the shoulder buttons,it is pretty expensive for what it is though.

That's exactly what I had hoped to hear :)

There appears to be some variations on the adaptors and it maybe a cheaper versions that I had read about. The one I had seen was a cross battle plus and could be got for just over £20... having a look now I see a XCM PS3 CROSS BATTLE ADAPTER 2.0 for £55..

Can you confirm if the one you have is the purple colour version, just so I order the right one ?

Cheers

Be aware that the triggers on the 360 pad using XCM are not analogue. In theory, this would affect racing games would it not but as I'm crap at them, I can't verify this. :D Otherwise, I have experienced no discernable lag with it.

I didn't know that, I assumed the triggers would remain analogue.

If they are not analogue using the XCM then it would not be worth me getting one, I was very close to pressing the Buy Now button :(

Yes, they're definitely not analogue - I've verified it with PixelJunk Racers. That's a good test because you actually have to hold a rev counter at 6,000 revs just to access the game menu at the start. :D Using the XCM, the trigger makes it go to 10,000 revs regardless of how much pressure you use.

Well thanks for checking, I was just searching the web and the xcm website and could see no mention of it, and being such an important feature that's surprising.

A little disappointed now though as I thought I had it sorted.

Bugger,he's right,just checked with GT5 prologue.
Haven't played it before with the 360 controler.
Looks like the XCM ain't much good for driving games,i bought mine for fps's so not too disapointed.

It's also important to note the motion control aspect is obviously missing too. Not many games have made it mandatory or even used it at all so it isn't too bad.

Not obviously missing, my good man.

You can re-assign the analog sticks to be the SIXAXIS with the flick of a microswitch. :D

Sorry, havent been on/checked threads for a whille.

I followed his instruction and did it myself, Though i kept the 360 buttons as the PS3 buttons look junk, Its not that difficult really, plus i already had a broken 360 controller so the outlay in terms of cost was minimal.

Let me have a think, I might b able to do another after my hols for the cost of a beer if you supply the controllers.

Have you thought about those cheap add on triggers for the dual shock? I can't live without them.. Makes the controller so much better.

Thanks, I'll drop you an email later, maybe when you're back off hols we can sort something out. Cheers

I've got the Triggers and also bought some pretty good thumbstick covers.. I think it's just the general positioning etc I have a problem with and the analogue sticks are very loose in comparison to the 360's.

Am I missing something but it looks like he simply gutted the pair of them n slapped it together?

Do you have to solder or alter anything because I've got a spare ps3 controller n quite fancy doing this mod

Have a look at the How To section, there's a fair bit of sodering, wiring, unsoldering chips etc.. which is why I now I'd have no chance :)
