Hey guys,

I want somthing nice a modern looking, which has a good spec and is nice a light. For me the Macbook Air ticks all the boxes but the prices seem crazy. Are there any alternatives out there?? Also want at least a 13inch screen with a good battery life.

Dell M1330

Nowhere near,

Sony TZ
Toshiba R500
IBM x61 or x300
Dell D430 or whatever replaces it

Those are probably the top options today...

If you're scared by price though then these won't help, the macbook air is pretty competative for an ultraportable. Sony TZ starts at £1300 or so...

cheers bigredshark although none of them are for me. Sony's screen is too small, toshiba I wont touch since having 1 ten years ago and it caused nothing but hassle, IBM looks like somthing from the 60's. Think that dell m1330 is the best substitute so far.

It isn't really a direct competitor for the Air as it is no where near as portable (or stylish). That said I would say it is far better value so makes more sense to anyone who doesn't need the portability or style :)

2nd hand like new air's can be picked for for 800ish, would that be an option?

And Sibeer, WTF is that in your sig LOL

I'm surprised, toshiba used to make the best business laptops around and the R500 is good, it maybe feels a little bit weak but I haven't seen a broken one yet. As for consumer stuff, well thats a different story from the business ranges no matter who the manufacturer.

The M1330 isn't a macbook air competitor, it competes with the plain macbook.

The IBM/Lenovo is the best, regardless of looks, it's built like a tank, will never break and they're fast little machines. At the end of the day, everything in this class is business focused so style is a rarity unless it's sony or apple.

look at the new lenovo x200

12.1 inch ultraportable, supposed to be considerably cheaper than the x300/x301

downside is no optical drive or trackpad if that bothers you.

try a macbook the size is not that different and worth it for extra ports and cd drive but u can always take out the cd drive if you dont want it to save wait

also if u want an ssd can get a much bigger one from a shop like oc cheaper than the apple one in the air

I own a sony TZ and its really good, I would definetly recommend it if you have the money to splash out on it.

The screen is great, its really light and very fast, just dont expect to play any major games on it obviously!

This man speaks the truth. My IBM has survived numerous little 'accidents'.

It looks like a word replacement of boys (summertime love) by sabrina. How sad is it that I know the lyrics for that.
Great video though :)

I'm surprised, I owned a TZ briefly and it could only be described as fast when compared to a sloth. Every sony laptop I've had the displeasure of owning has been less than the sum of it's parts really.

Don't get me wrong, the TZ is largely in a class of it's own and if thats the kind of of laptop you want it's unbeatable but fast it isn't...

Respect to you Grimgoth. Your username doesn't suggest an affinity with 80s pop chicks, but you know you love it :)
