Alternative to coffee?

I went off coffee cold turkey for a couple of months awhile back and didn't notice any difference at all to my day to day life.

YMMV of course, indeed it certainly seems it may.

Green tea is not caffeine free my friend. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

No it isn't but it has less caffeine than a cup of coffee. There are plenty of caffeine free teas though. I have one or two decaff coffees in the mornings, and then I'm quite enjoying Green Roibos at the moment for the afternoon drinks.

Does anyone know of any alternatives which give you a boost without the side-effects of caffeine? Before anyone suggests the combination of l-theanine and caffeine, I am aware ;)
I seem to find what mood am in effects my how my energy levels feel more then doing things like drinking coffee or energy drinks...

Bored or depressed = no energy just want go to sleep or do nothing
normal = normal energy levels
happy = feels like have higher energy level
stressed = feels like a boosted energy level
ETC

If caffeine is causing you problems sleeping, do the following:
Don't drink more that 4-5 cups of coffee a day, and don't drink coffee after 6pm.
I like my tea, but generally will not have tea after 6pm (I usually go bed ~ midnight).

Just drink your coffee less and moderate the times you do drink it. No need to give up something you enjoy.

If you need a pick-me-up before the gym have you tried protein powder?

You haven't read the thread though, he seems to have researched it and is/was drinking less than you advise.

Protein powder is an alternative to food, a replacement. It's not a 'pick me up' it won't do anything like caffeine does in the slightest.

Just a quick note. Someone I know has always struggled with migraines and has recently (10months) given completely up caffeine and is much improved. However decaf tea and coffee still contain small amounts of it.

I feel somewhat privileged to not find coffee the slightest bit appealing, but I've also never seen the appeal in alochol or cigarettes either.

However my weakness is coke (the drink, not the drug) and I believe that contains a ton of caffeine too. I've tried giving up a few times and just end up with huge headaches and big cravings 3 or 4 days in.

Now I just limit myself to one of the small glass bottles a day, which isn't too bad given it's not even the size of a regular can, but even that is difficult to stick too.

Sorry I don't know any alternatives. There probably aren't any. This is why these corporations make billions. They find something addictive and market the ***p out of it

You could also try Whole Earth Wake Up coffee alternative. Made from barley, chicory and guarana...it's rather nice :)

I drink tons of cafetiere coffee, I have an expresso machine, I can make capachino and it doesn't disturb my sleep.

If you enjoy coffee don't give up - get into making a proper coffee once in the morning, or try it before the gym. Use 90-degree water, get a machine, warm the cup, warm the milk. Savor it.

Don't give it up.

:p

Tic-Toc (redbush)

I have a coffee in the morning maybe after swim or 10ish, but then thats it, best thing that append to me was when the coffee machine blew up at home. Took me about a month to get over the hill. Espresso for breakfast and numerous times throughout the day was not good for me.

As far as I know caffeine in general can have positive effects, both tea and coffee contain decent amounts of anti-oxidants. So in moderation would certainly not be harmful if not good for you - the caveat here is that some people can have adverse 'reactions' to it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with looking for alternatives - but I'd also be open minded to the fact that other things could be causing the side effects you mentioned.

I'm hyper sensitive to caffeine, I can't drink coffee/tea or coke with experiencing some pretty severe side effects.

Gave up a serious caffeine habit ages ago.. (i.e. two espresso grade caffetieres a day). This first time I cold turkeyed it..

Two days bad.. two weeks almost killed me (snappy at work, headaches, flushes, sweats etc etc).. then comes the collapsing tiredness and lack of focus.

What I did notice is that once this passes, you sleep when you're tired and you think more laterally - i.e. wide (caffeine seems to promote deep narrow thinking "concentration").

In the end I got so annoyed that limited choice of non-caffienated drinks when you go out and even less if you want a warm drink (herbal drinks.. hmm).

I then started again, detoxed again.. and currently have a cup in the morning and maybe the remainders of the cold coffee in the afternoon or a cup of tea (equally as bad).

I also found that drinking water helps lots but in the early days you're like a caffeine vampire.. you're drinking things, eating things but nothing really solves the thirst. The next time around I simply drank water.. then substituted one of the cups with 1/2 hot water than 100% water.. it helps.. but you need to stick to it..
