I'm new to Macs, and I'm really not getting on with Finder. Is there a reasonable and cheap/free alternative, which works a little more like Windows Explorer?

There is something you can get called 'XtraFinder' (free) that gives you added functionality to the Finder app. You might wanna give that a try. There is also 'TotalFinder' which does similar stuff but you have to buy that.

Check them both out

Finder is like Windows 95 Explorer.

Fixed for you...;)

That and the inability to just flick through images like you can in windows photo viewer (without having to highlight all the images you want to flick through first) are two of the biggest things I hate about OSX.

Press spacebar on the image and tap left, right, up, down...

Finder is like Windows Explorer, but half as powerful and ten times as frustrating to use. It's easily the worst part of OS X, especially the ridiculous keyboard shortcuts. I'm not surprised the OP is looking for an alternative.

This is my issue. I accept that there's a learning curve when moving from MS to OS X, however it seems that I've yet to be blinded by the mantra that everything churned out of Cupertino is perfect. Finder just seems a bit, well, '90s I suppose. I had higher expectations...

Anyhoo, I'll give PathFinder a go, as a mate of mine suggested it when I asked earlier today.

Thanks all for your replies.

Erm. Ease of image viewing is one of the things I really like on OS X compared to Windows. Find list of images, hit the spacebar and scroll up and down. It really couldn't be easier!

Except you cant zoom in preview, and if you step back it goes up the file system rather than back to the previous file/photo... At least it does on my Lion install...

EDIT: AHHHH! So up and down do scroll up and down the photos, right also scrolls forwards, but back just goes up the file structure... Anyone tell me how you zoom in preview...?

Feek, you can do exactly the same with windows, except you need to click one more time rather than press the space bar (and you can zoom in and out).

Path finder is the way forward as said before - I use this more than finder as it is a more polished 'file browser/management' thingymajigg.

Just like to add my two cents to this and recommend XtraFinder (http://www.trankynam.com/xtrafinder/). It really is an awesome piece of software, and it's free! Running perfectly well on 10.8.2 with no lag or issues whatsoever.

I got it mainly for the one option I miss terribly from Windows, and that was the Right Click > Create New .txt File option, this adds this, but it's other features are great two.

It vastly improves Finder in my eyes, and adds the Windows Explorer features back I really missed.

What's more is it sits on top of finder, so anything that uses finder uses xtrafinder instead/as well, it's quite seamless.
