Alternative to Gmail?

It's for 2 users so it's not exactly an enterprise solution.

E-mail is a big part of our business so am more than happy to pay for a service. What I don't want to do is over engineer the solution! Gmail has been pefectly acceptable for the past 5 years.

Newsflash: Gmail uses the same interfaces as Exchange, and frankly trumps it in both UI and performance.

perhaps I'm missing something then with the way gmail works, but how would i put multiple domains and distribution groups etc on gmail? I find outlook to be spot on, and exchange support on android/iphone/ipad is spot on, as is OWA in exchange 2010.

Genuine question as if i can save money by not having my server running 24/7 and not worry about my domestic connection going down it'd be certainly interesting.

I had the same error on one of my Gmail accounts a couple of months ago ... clicked on the click here as per the last line of the quoted text in the above and had access to the account again within a couple of hours.

In fact I think it's happened twice to that account (I suspect someone is sending spam with it as the false address as the account itself does nothing other than get the odd account activation email for when I create login to forums etc).

Google Apps :) (as in, "Google Apps" not "Search on Google for Apps" :))

it says $50 per user, would that be per email address or per mailbox? I can't work that out, ie if i have 3 domains, 6 distribution addresses but only 2 actual physical users, would i be paying $100 or considerably more?

even still, would have to work out if this would be cheaper than my server being on vs selling it and buying a NAS.

Per user account. One account can have many domains, many mailboxes, etc. :)

There's probably a limit on the number of each for each though.

Maybe Google's masterplan is to force me over to google apps!

Am investigating what I can do with imap via the clustered hosting I have with tsohost.
Will then probably trial the hosted exchange and google apps if the imap solution doesn't work out.

I'd pay more and get a hosted Exchange Server from Microsoft. I tend to trust Microsoft more with this as they've been doing it a lot longer than Google.

As I say this is only for 1 account for 2 people to access. I don't need an enterprise style solution (or at least I don't think I do!)

I use http://fastmail.fm/ (now owned by Opera) for my domains, although I don't have any major traffic or business use, so I can't really say how reliable they are - they have a good reputation though - I've not had any problems.

I'm trying to move away from Google, eventually to run a local mail server but in the meantime fastmail offer me a slightly more flexible solution than google apps (albeit with less bandwidth/space as they're not as 'big').

I can't believe the people in this thread suggesting him getting an exchange server for one email account used by him and his wife!

To the OP; I'm sure you'll get access to the address eventually, but you can't expect it to happen particularly fast because it's a free account. As it's for a business, I would suggest moving to a paid service so that you get more support and reliability. Not only that, but sending business email from a gmail account looks unprofessional in my opinion. I would suggest choosing one of your domains (your company's name perhaps) and setting up an account for you and your wife. Then you can forward the other domains as you currently do.

You could use Google Apps as suggested. Where I work, we outsource our email to this company, and they seem decent enough.

I had this a while back, as many do, there seems to be some weakness somewhere where they manage to reset an account and then spam your address book with some lame viagra email or something similar.

Just follow the reset proceedure and I bet if you go to the bit thats says this "Last account activity: xxx hours ago on this computer. Details" at the very bottom of the screen you will have a login from the far east or something that clearly wasn't you.

It's meant for small business up to around 25 people so don't think it's too much. Last I heard it was 100 quid a year per user.

It has some extra benefits such as Office 365. Although I haven't looked much into this.
